Neil Long is not happy, as his blog entry attests to. It seems that reflecting on some of his old favourites has made him come to realise that those fantastic games are... well, not so fantastic. Check out the source to find out about games becoming outdated, games that are timeless and some titles that just aren't that great when revisited later down the track.

GoldenEye. There, I've said it. GoldenEye is nowhere near as good as you think it is. Dig out your N64 and fire it up - you'll discover that the controls are worse than you thought, it's really glitchy and some of the visuals look very, very dated indeed.

That's inevitable, of course - the gaming world has moved on considerably since its release in 1997. What I'm talking about here is that feeling of disappointment when you return to an old game only to discover that it's nowhere near as good as you remember. Father time ravages some games much worse than others, it seems.

Neil Long's nostalgia center is malfunctioning.

Really old games aren't as smooth and don't look as nice as new games. They could also be repetitive.

    This is nothing new.

And yet games like Starfox 64 also known as Lylat Wars did amazingly well and are still loved today. Just because something has poor graphics and is rather repetitive (though it comes with replaying anyway) that by no means makes it a bad game on automatic terms.

I'm not saying the games are bad. You misunderstand me. The writer of the article is basically saying that old games aren't good, because he's comparing them to new games and talking about smoothness, graphics and repetitiveness. That's like complaining about how the original Japanese Godzilla films aren't good because they don't look realistic.

But if you judge anything by modern standards the fact is it's gonna come up short but, if you're not stupid and judge things by the standard in which they were made it's a different story. That's why this article is redundant.

Ah right, fair enough. Few would judge by the period standards rather than modern though, sadly.

    No, it is.

    I love nostalgia.

    What 'choo talkin' 'bout, man?

Most games we remember a decade+ later are obviously worth playing (still) in some way or another. Otherwise, why do we even bother remembering?

    Mm... FFTactics...

He dissed Streets of Rage. Eh, most of the games he mentioned I still find fun, so I don't really mind that he's moved on. ^__^
