Kyle of Insert-Disc takes a look at the first truly great Sonic the Hedgehog game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in his ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog Retrospective.

Unlike Sonic 1, Sonic 2 does not make you move incredibly slowly in a poorly-designed second zone. Chemical Plant Zone is really well designed and probably one of the fastest zones in the series. Lots of moving fast along pathways, jumping off of ramps, and branching paths. Chemical Plant Zone is just a lot of fun to play, although Act 2 can get a little annoying if you fall into the water in the latter half.
