Binge Gamer's James Walker lists off the many reasons why multiplayer achievements should be abolished, from weak online support to games that literally can't be played online anymore.

Multiplayer achievements should be banished to the darkest recesses of hell. It’s true that many of these multiplayer achievements are unnecessarily difficult, which in itself is not a problem. After all, difficulty in games is a good thing, contrary to what most modern reviews would have you believe. The issue lies in the fact that 95% of games have no online community, meaning that several achievements are forever lost. Of course this plays into the larger issue of whether or not most games need a multiplayer component, but that is a tirade for another day.

I agree! Not only do they cause havoc online but are sometimes impossible to gain, especially when the game has past its prime.

Depends on the kind of multiplayer achievements. If they are at least plausible, I don't mind. I have accepted the fact that I will never 100% GRAW because of the god damn "reach the top of the leaderboards" achievements.

I remember when I got graw, I looked at the achievements, *bleep* this shit how the hell is everyone supposed to reach the top of the leaderboards?

Also I don't like achievements that might mess with how you play. Like in L4D2 the level a charger achievement, while some may want to do it in private games setting it up, others would do it legitimately, and rather than focus on being good, they focus on doing 1 stupid thing.

First and foremost, I'd like to point out that the writer of this article (And those who strive for 100% achievements) have a serious problem with their epenis. Really, stop playing for the metagame.

The whole achievement thing with Multi-player is pretty hit and miss. Sometimes, it's done tastefully where it's not going out of your way to do. For example, something like "Kill x amount of people" or "Pull someone off of a cliff ledge"

However, when you have a game that requires extremely specific things where a player has to go out of their way to do (Shoot down an air vehicle while being shot through a cannon), you have jackasses that try to do that CONSTANTLY until they get it, disregarding the team as a whole.

I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure how you get "epenis problem" from this article -- especially considering the majority of it talks about games that have no online community thus making said achievements near impossible for anyone to get. Not because of lack of skill, but because of lack of opportunity.

The fact that he's trying to get every achievement in the game just to up his gamescore pretty much seals the deal.

    I approve of perhaps:

    Killzone 2 - Reach Commander Rank/Play 50 Games/Win 50 Games/Get all combat medals.

    I DONT approve of:

MAG - Get every Medal/Get Every Ribbon

SERIOUSLY!?! Lemme give you an example. The side-arm ribbon is aquired by killing 30 people in one game with your side-arm ONLY! Thats a pistol or a mini-uzi (TMP?) And for a silver trophy you need to get this ribbon five times! Then get 1000 kills with a side-arm for the medal.

And I won't even start about getting to level 60 on Raven...(NEVER AGAIN!)

considering how console 'communities' in multiplayer games last about a month unless it's a AAA big name title, theyre stupid. i'm pretty sure it's the new NBA live game that has an achievement (i'm also fairly sure it's a hefty 100 points) for being online at the same time as 1000 other players. this is going to be impossible to get after a few months.

Not to mention the word "Achievement" seems to have lost its meaning. How is being online at the same time as 1000 other players considered an achievement.. because everyone knows how hard it is to go online, right? More like an achievement for the publisher...

I don't have a prob with online multi achievements, as long as they aren't ridiculous hard or grindy (like GRAW, Killzone 2 and the others already mentioned in other posts).

Multiplayer achievements are good. The only problem comes when companys like EA decide to shut down servers or just decide to make multiplayer achievements that don't work.

I don't think they should either to be honest, that was one thing Modern Warfare 2 did get right.

Halo 3DST Vidmasters with 4 people...urgh, Bungie you bastards, robbing me of my last 50G

I hate the Halo achievements. You have to boost for alot of them. Since most of them are free for all or mythic achievements.

Killzone 2: To get three trophies you must OWN online even though the community is very small.

    Me: And if I suck?

Killzone 2: Go play Call Of Duty!

    Me: *sad face*
