It seems among all the RPGs released into the gaming world, we are all most attracted to those Japanese buyouts. Whether its Final Fantasy or Xenosaga, the statistics stay the same. This article will give some pretty good outlined reasons on why this is not an opinion, rather a imminent fact.

"Why do we love Japanese RPGs so? We've pinpointed the common threads that keep the popularity in the stratosphere and what needs to be done to keep it that way in the new gen."

Interesting that they didn't include storyline, which is the main reason why the majority of people buy RPGs.

It is the main reason I play them because of that factor

There just aren't that many non-Japanese RPG's out there, so they have little competition.

Agreed. For example, people gripe about the lack of storyline in FFXII. It should be noted that it is an important part of an RPG. What would 7 be without the story? Nowhere.

    DIDN'T include storyline?
    quote Article
Linear gameplay, immersive storylines, impressive lengthy cinematics, amazing soundtracks
Admittedly though, they didn't go into detail like the other 3 -_-

Oh, and it is interesting to know (not mentioned in the article though) that there are whole orchestras devoted just to game (and on a related note, anime) music...

Square Enix really does make great art, and music, for their games

bbb700 is right, and also i dont think anyone is really thinking "this game is Japanese" while they are playing.

The Non-Japanese RPG games are usually in Medieval times with Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, Wizards and lots and lots of magic, the only game that has ever done that so attractively was "The Elder Scroll" series, apparently.

Japanese RPGs range from Fantasy to Sci-fi and even both and do it awesomely, take Rogue Galaxy for instance.

Yes, [Square] [Enix] is [were] not the only Japanese RPG developer[s] around, Go Level 5/Atlus.

I really don't like the whole traditional Elves and Dwarves thing in most Western RPGs. And yes Level 5 is an amazing developer (they did a great job on Dragon Quest VIII).

RPG games are my favourite and probably always will be. I guess I like them because they are usually longer games and often more challenging.

As, even though the storyline is most definitely fictional, the characters and the scenario's can be related too, which is a very nice feature - You almost feel for the characters ^^
There timeless classics as well. I could go play any of them now if I really wanted to and still be engrossed ...

I would have thought it was because Japan is leading with technology, meaning they are smarter and have whackier ideas than us to develop games.

Just my thought, as I don't know much since I don't play Japanese RPG games.

xD, god you are funny at times Jason.

They are great games because of stories, gameplay and many more factors. They are simply amazing games compared to American games as much.

Harvest Moon : Friends of Mineral Town is one of my favorite Japanese RPG's.

The stories are enjoyable. Japan RPG's give us nice, lengthy games to play through, and more often than not, I'm satisfied with them. Their characters can also be quite appealing, like Rinoa was for me in FFVIII
