Frag Crunch's Mohammed M takes a look at swearing in video games and whether the gaming industry sometimes takes it too far when it comes to adding cursing to games.

Over the years, as games have matured in content and as a medium in general, it seems like the focus now is to present games as an art form. While I won’t go into the merits of games as art, I will say that game developers and writers are making great progress towards this goal. However, it seems like the gaming industry tries a little too hard to emulate the often unnecessary and obnoxious trend of excessive swearing in Hollywood.

I don’t think that games have truly found an equilibrium where they can contain swearing but have it be appropriate and meaningful to the overall package.
Play MadWorld, it's a brilliant game with the most beautiful use of swearing I've ever seen in one. I'd definitely say it's appropriate and meaningful.

I prefer if games have swearing because they seem more natural that way, but having too much swearing just gets annoying and makes it feel like the makers were just going overboard.

I'm guessing the author lives in some imaginary world where only children swear. Fair enough if a game has too much swearing to the point where it starts sounding ridiculous, but RE5 and Uncharted 2 are not two of those games. Is it really so unrealistic that a character will drop the F-bomb in the face of an obstacle or death? If anything, it makes a game more realistic. Some people just...swear.

Though I see where he's coming from, where does this guy live? I agree that swearing increases realism, most people I know swear very regularly.

I can remember only a few years ago I was shocked to hear *bleep* in a game. It's only recently that gaming dialogue has become more like film. There's no problem with it though. You have to consider that most games are war related, which would inspire most anyone to drop some profanity.

A few days I ago I saw Carl Reiner drop the C-bomb on TV.

Swearing is no longer taboo. Welcome to the new age, fag.
