Super Smash Bros. unfortunately has been taken over by the "Smash Bros. purist" who will only play the barest stages with all the items turned off, turning a unique game into another fighter clone.

items present an entirely new way to maneuver the playing field and look for ways to strike, one that I believe is harder to master.

And gamers deciding how they are playing the game is ruining a fighting series because....???

Core gamers want to play fair.
    Casual gamers play for fun.

The 2 rarely meet other than in internet forums so how is it ruining the game is certainly beyond me especially on a topic that's so old it's been going on since the N64.

Most core gamers do have fun when they play competitively. It's just like competitive anything else, you're in for the fun of it in the long run

Yeah, the difference is that core gamers shit their pants at people playing casually and "fun" often gets thrown out the window if things don't go exactly as planned.

You know, I was kinda expecting a punchline at the end of the article, but I guess the writer was serious. Haha.

So what if people want to stage competitive battles on Final Destination with no items? That's how they get fun out of it and it is nobody else's place to tell them how they should go about it.

The item arguement is horrible too. Just because the luck is equally distributed does not change that it is still luck and just because items do not translate to automatic wins does not mean that the user does not gain an immediate advantage they did not earn. Items can be fun for casual battles but trying to pretend that there is fairness to item distribution is outright silly.

items dont mean squat if you know how to block and dodge effectively. i cant hit you with a Bob-omb if you dodge at the right time or if your shield block most of the impact.

It still doesn't change the fact that the person with the item has an immediate advantage. Of course, fighting games are naturally unbalanced with some characters automatically better than others, but items take this up several notches.

Not saying that items can't be fun as I play with them on quite often, but you can't pretend that there is no imbalance when they starting dropping in.

More bait guys? Are actually intellectual articles really that hard to make?

If you're not intellectual then yes.

You'd be surprised how much thought is needed for an intellectual article, easier to just make flamebait articles or redundant ones, much more easier and you get more hits to.

        Sad but true.

And this is the exact reason gaming journalism had no right to become as big as it has become.

          Sad but true.

my friends are this way too. they always want to turn off all items and Smash balls all the time which i think is boring, cause im a long time fan of the "lightsaber" sword weapon and throwing it at ppl's faces. also the super moves are fun to do besides, just make the Smash balls appear less often.

my friends even refuse to turn on the bare essentials of items and make them appear rarely. thats kinda why i got tired of playing. now i can see turning off all items for a tournament, but when you are playing with friends to have fun, seriously...

It depends on the friend for me tbh. A bunch of my friends prefer playing with no items. It doesn't bother me what we use. I just want to play the game to have fun. Having items on can be pretty fun. It's even better when you're playing as Peach and you pull a bomb out of the ground and chuck it and your friend is dead and everyone just bursts out in laughter.

I agree though. The hardcore players are taking over.

Thats why I quit the stuff. It stopped being "random fun violence" and more "srs bsns tourneys lololol"

      Which is completely fine, Drago.

As for the author of this article...He's just another moron that doesn't understand competitive smash (or competitive gaming period). This line alone prove this fact
      quote
who will only play the most boring stage, Final Destination
This guy probably got his ideas from that "No items, Fox only, FD" vid, which again, is severely misinformed. Going into depth about competitive smash would take too long. Furthermore, casual players seem to think that tiers do not exist, and that is completely ridiculous. You mean to tell me that no character is better than the other? Lol, that's hilarious.

Might I add that competitive smashers do not have a problem with casual smashers, and that it is the casual smashers that have beef with the competitive smashers

stop being so butthurt, casual smashers(not directed towards anyone)

also, Brawl is definitely not better than Melee. It's better if you a complete scrub when it comes to beat-em-ups. I played Brawl for a little over a year and still can not understand why anyone would play that terrible game over melee.

It's unfortunate because that is the truth Drag. I still play this game often but I've left being the competitive or hardcore player I was when I first started playing Brawl.

When it was just Melee, I always had items on and knew nothing about competitive play. I knew what Wavedash was, but had no idea how to do it. I only learned after Brawl.

I just play Brawl with the settings I have on it. I haven't bothered to change it back. It's still no items but I play on Smashville more than anything with Delfino popping up often.

The game is fun when you just play it for the heck of things and you and your friends are just fooling around. But srsly Melee is better than Brawl. Heck SSB64 is better than both.

Btw posting this article in the Brawl forum would be a hilarious site but full of trolling.

These guys do it because you take skill away when all you need to do is throw a pokeball or use the smash ball.

I point this out not to argue if this line, newly brought to the forefront, in gaming culture is a good idea or a bad idea but to simply express that this line does exist. What I do want to argue is whether or not this emphasis on the divide makes the new emphasis on casual gaming itself a good idea or a bad idea. I wish I could stand up and shout “Gamers unite, lay down your hardcore and casual ideals and realize we are one!” But I’d sound stupid and this divide has always been here, we’re just looking at it now and it is this scrutiny that has widened the divide. So we can’t really blame the influx of casual gaming on the divide between casual gamers and hardcore gamers since both have always been around. The idea that casual games are bad because they divide the gaming world is false. The gaming world divides itself, casual gamers want to be just that and hardcore gamers want to be hardcore.
like look at what blizzard did to World Of Warcraft

Blizzard is in the business of making money, not making a better game. Normally the two are opposite. In its infinite wisdom, Blizzard started listening to the casual gamer.

    * casual gamers wanted to raid
    * casual gamers wanted the epic gear
    * casual gamers wanted the tier gear
    * casual gamers wanted to not think about what gear to get to fit their class

With all of these demands Blizzard slowly changed the game to be easier and easier. At first these changes only affected the lower level. The end game was still held in reserve to those who were serious about the game. Blizzard reasoned that they must make the beginning game much easier for everyone to understand and therefore enjoy and purchase a subscription.

Due to their changes of making getting to the end game easier, more and more casual gamers achieved the highest level in the game. Then you had a much larger population of people that did not know their class and who did not raid. Blizzard finally changed the end game to be easier and easier.

People went from raiding Naxxramus in blues, to requiring people to be in epics coming into Naxx. They quickly forgot that Naxx was the first instance that dropped epics at all.

With this mindset the entire game went down hill. People started requiring higher and higher gear-scores to do content that did not require it.

    Well, here's what I think.

Honestly, my brother is one of the purists and I've stopped playing with him. I find no fun in playing on a flat stage with no items. Well, that's just me. I find no fault in people who use no items. I suppose they just prefer tournament-style play.

I can't argue if Melee or the original is better, because I didn't have either copy.

I just find it sad that people believe that they are the "one" and their way is the only way. I mean, I can sometimes reach agreements with my brother about playing. We turn on just food and smash balls, and that's fine with me.

There's no reason to get on a rant about other people's preferences, honestly.
