Go Fanboy's Craig Hasselback explains how the Playstation 3's proposed ten year lifespan seems very likely now that the console has picked up steam and how it could impact future consoles.

The days of three major console manufacturers are numbered. It's not because the shelves are overcrowded or that sales are down, which they have been slightly. No, surprisingly it's because of the current third place platform in the US that's rapidly catching up in sales and surprising many analysts.

Considering the PS2 lasted about 3 years into this generation, I could easily see the PS3 doing the same to the next, but for much longer.

I don't doubt sony's plan to continue support with the ps3 for 10 years, it can easily handl that, however I doubt it'll out last the next xbox, next nintendo console and even the PS4 itself.

Remember, kiddies like shiny new things.

Both machines are selling well (the Xbox 360 primarily in the west and poorly in the East), but are beginning to show their age.
You say the 360 and Wii are starting to show their age? In what way are they beginning to show their age?

The 360 is almost 5 years old now, in technology years that is pretty much ancient. It is definitely showing it's age now, for a start there is only so much you can do with DVD's. It needs to move on to a bigger format or else future games will definitely be stifled by the limits imposed, plus the GPU is starting to chug along on the newest games. Basically games are getting more demanding and the 360 is an old dog struggling to learn new tricks.

My household got a Wii and a PS3 for Christmas. The Wii hasn't been turned on in months, and the PS3 is played every day.

Wii 2, definitely. Next Xbox, bring it on!

So we would be onto the Wii 3 and the Xbox 1080 before the PS3 finally dies out? I doubt it, but it depends on what exactly defines it 'dying out'. It wouldn't be in good shape anymore, that's for sure, but that doesn't necessarily mean there wouldn't still be a small market for games there.

Depends on how analysts define it, when we were at the LAGC this year we had the GM of Gamestop Digital Ventures noting that a massive section of their used game market still comes from the PS2, that while the main cities and hot areas of each coast are next-gen the bulk of the US was still crawling through the PS2 library available in the used bins.

It'll be interesting to see where all of this goes, it certainly looks like a giant mess that all of the console companies are tied up in. Interactive gestures, 3D, Social Networking. Wish they would stick to just making enjoyable games.

It will outlast them, sure. But it won't be anywhere near up to par with them.

Haha, I'm still amused to think about seeing an Xbox 720 or Xbox 1080 in the future.

Anyways, I don't care. Aging or not, all I care about it how good the games are.
