The writer discusses the current state of RPGs and expresses his opinion of where they are headed from here. He also highlights specific game elements that he believes are required of all RPGs.

It seems like so many of the games we play today are blurring the lines between genres. So what does this say about the RPG genre? Is it dead, or simply reforming under new rules? What defines an RPG? Where will the RPG go from here?

RPGs have been corrupted by the West. The best RPGs focus on story instead of pointless sidequests that add endless hours of useless gameplay. As a HUGE RPG fan, it is easy to see who is to blame for the "fall of the RPGs." Stories have been sacrificed and when it is not, the West complains about linearity...

And your saying that a fair few JRPG's don't add pointless sidequests that add endless hours of useless gameplay? And your suggesting that only western RPG's do that? Stop being such a fanboy.

What is the matter with you? What happened in your childhood that made your taste in games be so terrible and your opinions so painful to read?

Western RPGs are just RULING JRPGs. What actually good JRPGs have there been lately that can compare to the either sales, reviews or awards games like: Oblivion, Fallout, All of BioWare's masterful games, etc. have achieved? There is a reason they go on to dominate the industry while the rare and admittedly good but flawed JRPGs like Tales of Vesperia (the only good JRPG I can think of besides an average FFXIII) don't come to near the amount of success.

Are you the only one that is right or something? Not the consumer continuing to buy Western RPGs a bajillion times over JRPGs? Reviews continuing to be extremely high for Western RPGs? Western RPGs getting GotY awards? Western RPGs are currently easily the king and JRPGs are DYING if not DEAD for a reason - no one wants to play them anymore. I'm sorry your favorite genre has been absolutely stagnant for years and hasn't progressed at all.

BTW, your sidequest points is *bleep*ing stupid and terrible and you should be ashamed you came up with that. How many stupid ass fetch quests are there in JRPGs? Pointless sidequests that have you explore an area you've already been to is a sad attempt to stretch gameplay? Meanwhile, you mean to tell me games like Fallout, Oblivion, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect 2 have pointless sidequests? Honestly. How wrong can a human be.

... DO YOU EVEN *bleep*ING KNOW WHAT RPG STANDS FOR OR ARE YOU JUST GUSHING OVER FF7 TOO MUCH TO ACTUALLY ACK-*bleep*ING-NOWLEDGE IT??!?!

This guy's gonna give me a hernia

@ShadowGuard these stories you speak of usually made no sense. You should go back and play some of your old favorites and you'll realize that the stories were very 2Dimensional, linear, and full of holes and nonsense.

Oh come now...full of holes? In Final Fantasy VII when Cloud and his party find Red XIII's father with Petrified it's not like they could have given him anything to help cure that. He's not made of Soft.

Or again in Final Fantasy VII when Arieth was stabbed by a Sephiroth who inexplicably takes his gloves on and off between shots, he could have given her a Phoenix Down but instead opted to submerge her because it makes for a "better" story.

Comon, every FF fan knows Phoenix downs revive KO'd people not dead people

Because being stomped on by a ten story dragon, exploded, and divided by zero will only KO you. Yet a stab through the gut with a sword that, while long, is pretty thin will kill you in moments.

Wait dude are you seriously suggesting that wouldn't actually kill someone? If your spinal cord is completely impaled, you're dead. =/

He's not implying you're likely to survive, he's implying you're more likely to survive than in the aforementioned scenarios in which the party commonly jumps back up from.

^ That. Gameplay and story segregation is pretty bad in the JRPG genre.

You now realize that western rpgs aren't really different in that regard. Besides, to honestly be complaining about that is absolutely pathetic. Gameplay quality reduces drastically when you really expect things to be that realistic all the time.

He's not crying about it or anything like that, and he's damn sure not saying it makes WRPG's better, he's just saying the whole 'well phoenix down revives KO'd people but she was dead so it makes sense' thing that fanboys pull (not OV, of course, but the ones that do) is bullshit; you're being absolutely pathetic.

Stop having ragegasms at everything and use some *bleep*ing logic.

Oh great SG is again on his stupid anti-WRPG crusade.

For me at least WRPG's are THE RPG's to play. I used LOVE JRPG's but I have grown mostly tired of them now.
