In fact most game developers don't care what software you use, as long as it shows that you can do what they ask for.
Bioware have a job opening for a contractor game writer (freelance basically) now of course using the editor for Mass Effect etc would be ideal but you can use the next best thing, Neverwinter Nights editor...if you can't get that then use another game such as The Elder Scrolls.
the job basically needs you to construct a storyline such as a quest with interaction for the player etc...this means you don't need to program/code/script/model etc.
With that said, there are many ways of getting into the industry, it all depends on which area you want.
Also if you can wrap your head around Valve's hammer editor, you can pretty much use any editor and get a job anywhere
or you can do what I did and get your step into the industry via the community management area. My experience came from 6-7 years of moderating right here at Neoseeker.
Now I am part of the Community Team for EA
