There is a problem with the new proposed setup for Dragon Age II: what happens if people didn't quite like the style of Mass Effect? While most of the news about the release is fun and exciting, there are some bits that are...well...less than riveting.

Yesterday BioWare released the fine news that Dragon Age II will be coming out next year. March 2011 to be exact. What did this do to the staff of Polish the Console? Well we went positively crazy with delight. We actually thought about stopping work at our real jobs to begin following the releases.

I am sorry, but I just don't see why it's such a drastically big deal that now you can't name your character. Is the game gonna kick ass? Most likely? Okay, that's what I care about.

I'm on the fence about this game. I think, like some others, I am already disappointed with the fact that 1) You can no longer be any other races, 2) The character you spent creating in Origins and Awakening will not be continuing into Dragon Age II (I'm actually thinking they will release another Expansion that will tie all loose ends up.) 3) They are going the Mass Effect, voiced route. This kinda makes me iffy because normally we get like, 3-6 choices to respond to characters in origins. In Mass Effect, we get 3, a paragon (good), a neutral, and a renegade (bad). I'm hoping they don't do this, but the VA costs will certainly be an issue and 4) It's set in an entirely different part of the DA world and has no connection to the original game other than the character being part of a town that gets wiped out early in the game.

I think between the voice acting, the 'new dynamic combat system', and the fact that suddenly we have a named character who can't be anything but a human, people are making comparisons to Mass Effect because they fear it sacrificing all the hardcore RPG elements in favor of reaching a more casual audience. Bioware did state that they already got a huge audience with DA and would not alienate them, but hopefully some of these changes will be good. I personally don't care if a character is voiced, but if I can have 3 voices responses vs 6 non voiced ones, I'll take the 6 non voiced ones every time.
