The new ultraviolent PSN and XBLA title Shank takes some gameplay mechanics from the ever-popular Smash Bros. series. The accessibility of the controls and the over-the-top action is just another reminder of how much the former Nintendo classic has influenced the newest 2D brawler.

And this game won't sell as one as Smash Brothers. But still looks interesting.
Instead of attempting to give game A more rep over game B or vice versa, the fact of the matter is, a beat 'em up is a beat 'em up.
The comparisons made in this article are the same as saying World of Warcraft is the same as Halo because the player can wield a sword
I don't see any "inspiration" from Smash Bros except for the fact that EVERY beat 'em up has exactly the same thing each beat 'em up should have. The difference is, Smash Bros pits you against 1 vs 1 or co-op vs co-op while Shank pits you against a crap load of enemies or two of you against a crap load of enemies.
Furthermore, there's a story in Shank, there is a reason you are senselessly beating the crap out of people, whereas there is no reason whatsoever in Smash Bros except the fact that you can do it.
Either way, I'm loving Shank and I don't want to take the good things this article says about it away but when you are comparing a AAA Nintendo title against an Arcade/Indie title...then you need to seriously take a look at your reporting/reviewing schedule and get some actual note worthy articles produced
Jus' saying
Like I said, comparing Shank to Smash Bros, saying it got inspiration from Smash Bros, when both are beat em ups and use the same system as any other beat em up is pretty pointless when both games aren't even rivals or meant to be competition against one another.
Smash Bros vs Marvel vs Capcom would suffice since they are on the same wavelength but other than both Shank and Smash Bros carrying the beat em up genre, there is no reason to compare the games.
Again that would be like comparing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with World of Warcraft because they are RPGs
