This is an editorial from one of our contributing writers at DualShockers who feels that the whole motion craze is a fad and that PS Move is no better than Microsoft's Kinect.

Should be Kinect is no better than Move. Because no matter how dumb they both are, Kinect is dumber of the two.

You've completely got that backwards, if you think Kinect is worse than it's worded right.

I back Kinect though, at least it's new technology. Move is purely a Wii rip off.

Kinect is like an EyeToy ripoff. Sony's been using motion tracking tech for years, even on the PS2. Kinect is barely new technology.

Eyetoy was a camera, it didn't track motion anymore than a shoulder held vhs recorder from 15 years ago. Kinect does depth and recognition. It may still be shit, but you can't seriously argue that a shitty peripheral from last generation is comparable.

But it's still a rip-off, is the point

EyeToy tracked head, torso and hands. Merely adding depth perception and sound recognition isn't a huge revolution like MS is making it sound like.

They're both equally horrible if they can't get the proper software support. Without good games that actually make you want to use the devices instead of ordinary controllers, they're nothing. The only thing at this point that has me thinking Kinect > Move is how it can supposedly be used for things other than games, like easy navigation through different interfaces and such. Though that still doesn't nearly justify the $150, so it's irrelevant at this point.

I really don't get the whole "rip-off" argument. If people didn't take other's ideas and build on them, we wouldn't have half the technology we have today.

Exactly.. Looking back in time Sony and Nintendo have been playing off each other.

The SNES incorporated the first shoulder buttons, Sony beat that adding 4 instead of 2 to the Playstation controller which is now industry standard.

Nintendo 64 incorporated vibration and analogue controls with 1 analogue stick. Sony came up with DualShock and 2 analogue sticks which is now industry standard.

Sony came up with EyeToy the first attempt at motion body tracking they followed up with Playstation Eye and realised it needed an input device so Move was born.. Microsoft have taken the Playstation Eye and not really added much to it.

I have a feeling Move will become the industry standard way of playing games while having full body tracking. I mean how does a Kinect gamer play Halo without buttons? It is already fiddly enough playing Forza as the game has to accelerate and brake for the gamer another downside of no buttons..

I'm sure you could combine Kinect with a controller rather easily to play games like that. It's up to the software on what it's supposed to recognize as input. Like isn't that orb supposed to be recognized by the camera on the Move controllers? Developers could just as easily implement something like that.

How can the camera know when you're pulling your trigger finger? It's such a subtle and small movement, not to mention your other hand is in front of it when holding a "gun."

It doesn't have to be the camera that picks it up, it could just use the USB input/wireless on the 360 like any other game. Rock Band is able to accept both a controller and a mic as input from a single player, so this wouldn't be any different.

I imagine the software could be designed to pickup anything though. Got a broom laying around? Now it's a light saber for that Star Wars game shown at E3.

No I meant in general, without any controllers, how does Kinect pick up gameplay inputs like shooting? Sure It recognizes you're pretending to hold a gun, but how does it recognize you firing? Kinda needs a controller, dunnit?

Eh? That was what I said to begin with:

I was assuming you meant some sort of peripheral with no electronics in it or something.

well MS is promoting it to be a peripheral that requires no controller in hand, when there are things that clearly need one. I know you could use a controller, but as of yet there isn't one involved in Kinect apart from your body. MS has already said you can play shooters with Kinect, but I don't see how without controllers. That's basically the answer I'm looking for.

          I agree with Red.

Microsoft have stated that Kinect is a peripheral without buttons, while Sony have been raving about how theirs has buttons Microsoft has done the opposite so much it would be practically hypocritical to release a button interface now.

Let's face it without some kind of interface Kinect cannot do complex games like shooters, role playing games.. Hell practically any game that involves walking, aiming and shooting of some kind. It can't really do racers as the only one it has, Forza has to accelerate and brake for you as they can't accurately tell what your feet are doing..

Kinect needs a controller but the whole gimmick is gaming without one so the whole concept is flawed..

I really don't get the whole "Whah, my system is better than yours, admire our peripherals!!!!" argument.

That's a rather pointless comparison, Kinect and Move are two comletely different things.

A more accurate comparison would be "Move is No Better Than the Wii Motion Plus"

It's pointless to compare different things? Sorry, I don't see the logic there.

I appreciate Kinect, I like the premise, I like the idea, it's amazing technology. Just not really for games.

The Move is retarded, and I'm pretty sure even Sony can see that considering their main advertising point, the one they're pushing the most is 'IT HAS BUTTONS'.
