OXCGN's dkpatriarch looks at the advantages of dumping online multi from game discs and instead putting them as downloads. He decides that there are 5 advantages to doing so, including cutting costs and improving game quality.

Is it time to drop online multiplayer from game discs?

Do we need both single and multi together? Not necessarily.

It’s no secret that I’m not big on online multiplayer games for reasons I’ve discussed before. I’m rather a fan of old-time co-op and split-screen mulitplayer with bots, but most of you (and certainly present-day developers who have largely abandoned offline multi) would see that as behind the times. Fair enough.

However, despite my stated bias I see dumping multiplayer from disc-based games as a possible benefit to both those who are fans of single player gaming and those who are online commando multiplayer junkies.

Here’s five of my reasons why it might be a good idea and work.

But it wouldn't make single player games cheaper; if devs made it so you get multiplayer as DLC they'd just make it so the game costs the same and the DLC costs about £5/$10 making the overall thing more expensive, because they're soulless *bleep*ing bloodsuckers. For a cynic you're quite trusting.

the only thing here is that the bloodsuckers want their games to sell and atm with people's financial condition people aren't paying full price for a lot of games other than the AAA ones.

It may be in their interest to lower the price on single player and sell multi separate.

Well multi is what most people buy games for these days, I mean loathe as I am to admit it the casual FPS/sports game market makes up a lot of the overall sales so if anything this might indeed hurt more than help, from a financial standpoint. Unless if you meant to sell the entirety of the multiplayer separately as a separate game, if you will, but the wording suggested otherwise.

    Or not...
What possibly made you think this up and write an article about it?

Well it says from the outset the guy doesn't like multiplayer, so I'd guess that was it, derp.
