Generally speaking, Nintendo has been quite revolutionary during the past generation, but with Super Mario's 25th anniversary upon us, it has shown me that Nintendo plays it too safe with their characters.

The problem is after all of these years, these icons are starting to feel tired. As gamers we know these characters intimately. We started on Link's first adventure, helped him along on his latest, and everything in between, so there's not much new for Link to show us. There isn't any deep dark secret or aspect of his life we wouldn't already know. It's the same for the other characters as well; they really don't have any surprises left for us.

I've said this a few times over the past few months. I might of made a rant about it not to long ago for something else. Nintendo knows that their current game series will sell. Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, Animal Crossing and a few others are all popular and they all sell really well.

I think Nintendo could afford making side projects that are new game series. Remember when they made Pikmin and Animal Crossing? New game series and they sold well and are popular games. Maybe it's time for Nintendo to do it again. If they make something and it fails, they have Mario and Pokemon to fall back on.
