Jedis this. Lightsabers that. Who gives a rats behind. Any real Star Wars junkie knows the best action involves high speed dogfights, trench runs, and lots of green and red lasers blowing stuff into bits! Some of the defining moments of Star Wars have been its space battles, and yet as time goes by people seem to be forgetting that lineage in favor of what George Lucas is now trying to pawn off as Jedi. New England Gamer says no! Our s-foils are locked in attack position and we want some cosmic chaos of the X-Wing variety!

Luckily, back in the old days of my childhood (oh the 90s), there was no shortage of good games out there recreating the experience. X-Wing and Tie Fighter are still PC classics. In fact, the first time I played X-Wing was the first time I can remember sitting down at a video game, looking at the clock and realizing that an entire day had passed without my noticing. Later on, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron became one my favorite games on the N64. I did a retro review of it recently and was delighted to find that time had done nothing to change how enjoyable a game it was. Even on the GameCube in the last generation the Rogue Leader games pushed the envelope of recreating the Star Wars experience. The Battle of Endor in the first Rogue Leader game still carries quite a bit of wow factor. The Battlefront games also produced some decent representation of the space action from both trilogies.

I agree, but not so much to Star Wars games but space sims in general. I remember burning hours flying through space in Freelancer and blowing stuff up in Starlancer, I loved playing Rogue Squadron with my B-Wing, and I still remember playing X-Wing when I was young.

What do we have these days? Star Trek Online? Riiight... because obviously that game's flying and shooting mechanics are awesomely fun /sarcasm. EVE Online? PK central with sometimes expensive results. Sadly I don't see this truly changing anytime soon though.

I'll agree that all of this ~Clone Wars~ crap is getting a little bit drawn out and diluting the original button-mashing rush of these licensed video games, especially after getting a good taste of Rogue Squadron for the GCN. What a beauty!
