Layton Shumway blogs about the Mario game series. Weighing up the pros and cons, he gives his opinion of what's good and what's not so good about each of the titles.

As the father of the Mario series, you'd think Shigeru Miyamoto wouldn't have a favorite child. But he does.

At an event in New York City this week, the Nintendo legend proclaimed Super Mario World as his favorite in the series. And that got us to thinking...which game is actually the best?

You could make an argument for just about any one of them. In fact, we're about to do just that.

It's more of a look on the platforming Mario games which is nice except the forgot the portable New Super Mario Brothers that came out on the DS.

I like how in the NSMBWii part, they say it's not the best because of the easy levels and then in SMB they say it's not the best because of the harder difficulty. Make up your mind on what you want.

I personally love a challenge and I still play SMB a lot. Heck I play more of the originals these days then I do the new ones because I enjoy the difficulty and they're good games. If I had to choose, SMW is my favorite out of that list.

Yeah that's what I was thinking haha.

My personal favorite old school Mario game is the original SMB2 game, only officially released in Japan. Great difficulty, which makes for a fun time.
