Multiplayer has existed in videogames since the industry formed, however, things changed dramatically when the first games of Doom were played over network in the nineties. From that point, online multiplayer became increasingly popular. Subsequent game releases pushed the technology envelope until 64 player deathmatches and Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) became the industry norm. There is no doubt that there has been a massive rise in prevalence of online multiplayer during the past decade but does this imply a proportional decrease in the quality and quantity of single player games available? Certainly not. While multiplayer has skyrocketed in popularity throughout the latest generation of games, there have also been a number of outstanding single player experiences for gamers to enjoy.
