Does Half life 2 still reign supreme in the FPS genre in the Call of Duty era? Half life still provides a pinnacle single player experience. Which has not been met by any of the other shooters focusing only on the multiplayer.
Valve’s Half-Life 2 is six years old this month. On its release, it was widely regarded as not only one of the greatest shooters of all time, but one of the best video games period; a beacon of what a game could be. Half-Life 2 transcended the constraints of its genre, elevating beyond a traditional shooting gallery into, one could say, a work of art. Each element of the game is meticulously designed and incorporated for maximum immersion. But six years is a long time, especially in the video game industry, which, like the technology that drives it, is progressing at a staggering rate. In its absence, titles like Modern Warfare and BioShock, for example, have been steadily pushing the first-person shooter into new territory. So how does the game stand up to today’s contenders?

It's probably still in my top 5 games all time though, so yeah. It's King in my book.
Just in terms of singleplayer experience, Half Life 2 is nearly unmatched in the industr as a whole, let alone simply within shooters. The game has a better story and narrative than nearly every other game out there, the presentation is top-notch and the gameplay certainly holds up today considering Half Life 2 was well ahead of its time.
The only aspect of Half Life 2 that hasn't aged all too well is the AI, but it certainly isn't bad (In fact it's still better than most shooters out now) and it does practically nothing to detriment the experience. The physics also don't have the same revolutionary appeal to newer gamers they did back in 2004, but they're still pretty much the bar to meet as far as physics engines go.
