Game Podunk Content Manager, Dan Curtis writes on how interesting it is when the character gamers control are silent and don't show much personality. Is there a reason for this? Read on for more.

Succeeding where others have failed to make me involved with a mute character, the Half Life experience offers a unique look at the gaming world that is rarely if ever replicated in other games. I am, of course, referring to the fact that in the Half Life franchise you always - and I mean always - only see the events unfold through the eyes of Gordon Freeman. There are no cutscenes in Half Life that break away from Gordon's view and show him to the gamer. If it wasn't for a few images circulating the net (such as the one above) we probably wouldn't have a clue what on earth Gordon looks like. Gordon Freeman is essentially the ultimate blank slate. He can be whatever we want him to be because we have no particular concept of what he should be like. We don't even have a face to put his name to most of the time as we constantly see the events unfold through his eyes.

Dull.. I don't actually mind Gordon Freeman, but that is about it. It absolutely does my head in, in RPG's where the NPC talks and yet I make a choice on what to say and nothing comes out.. It is *bleep*ing dull. I'm looking at you Elder Scrolls you may get plenty of things right, but you are pretty much the worse offender for dull muted characters.

If you can't work with mute characters, you lack an imagination.

I'm not really a fan of mute characters myself. I never project myself into them or imagine up my own personality. All I keep thinking is how dull they are and that the developers were too lazy to give the protagonist a voice
