Gameplay Today posted an analysis on the recent hacking of the Playstation 3 that's resulted in a growing community of "pirates". The article strangely focuses on how the piracy might be benefiting Sony in the US.

The title says it all, unless the name of your company is Capcom, Electronic Arts or one of the other major publishers. However if the name of your company is Sony, you’re not exactly hating pirates as much as it might appear on the surface. Piracy hurts two things. First it hurts the publishers who lose out on sales. These exact same game sales lose money for Sony in the form of royalties. So how is this beneficial to Sony in any possible sense when they’re losing royalty money from each game sale?

They lose money on royalties (which the article states). They lose money on PSN DLs (which is far too vast to just overlook). They lose money on Sony published games (EX: Killzone 3, which looks to be epic and should give them huge sales). While I understand what he is trying to say, he is definitely missing the bigger picture.

So according to this article, piracy is good, since it makes more people buy the system. Do you know any gamer who has spent more on their system than they have on games?

      Exactly...

My PS3 was £425 bought on launch..

I have 56 Playstation 3 games all of them were bought brand new on release or a few days after release. Each game in the UK is a minimum £39.99 excluding Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops at £49.99.

Cost of games for my Playstation 3 alone.. £2,259. My games collection cost 5 times more than the console I use to play them on. Sony lose every single time someone illegally downloads one of their games and that is a cold hard fact.

To be fair, not everyone will have that many games. I don't even have twenty, and half of them are pre-owned. I'm sure there are millions of people out there who have far fewer.

Though I agree. The cost of the games will for the most part balance out the cost of console.
