For years, the Xbox 360 has touted the fact that no other service can really compare to it. However, that may no longer be the case. We attempt to tackle the issue of Xbox Live and determine if in fact it is worth the money. Cheers!

It's still well worth the money.

I guess if all you have is a 360 then it certainly is.

I really don't think the Wii's online services should have been used here as a counterpoint. While I'm not big on paying for Xbox Live, I would take it on any day of the week over the lag and friend codes on the Wii.

I just use my PS3 for multiplayer now. I'd rather use my gaming money on games and not use a chunk for XBL gold.

Considering the fact that the family plan microsoft is now promoting allows you to add a yearful of live to 4 accounts for 100 bucks it's pretty worth it. Especially if you live in a house with more than one gamer.

or you could have 4 accounts for free on the PS3 while not being annoyed by the 10 year olds...

Bull. There's just as much annoying 10 year olds on PS3, I have one too. Both the online communities are almost identical.

the last part was a joke. I am starting to think PSN has more to be honest... Black Ops is horrible, and god forbid a girl starts using a mic...

It obviously depends on which games you play.I don't think I've ever played a PS3 game online with annoying children.Yes I have played some that have had children playing with mics but I don't think any of them have been annoying.

The amount of PS3 fanboys posting on Gamegrep lately is *bleep*ing ridiculous.

What's funny is there's no fanboyism about what is being said here.

What's so fanboy-ish about stating that the PSN is free and you prefer to use the PSN instead of pay money for XBL? If THAT is fanboyish to you, Aussie, than I'd hate to see what you'd think of some other places where it absolutely wreaks of fanboyism Lol

To state a fact is now being a fanboy?

What facts? Clearly this is a heavily opinionated article. Xbox Live is definitely worth the money for me. Anyone that thinks otherwise doesn't have to pay for it. Simple.

          HisServant77 Mar 12, 11
Hmm . . . so THAT sure sounds fanboyish to me. So claim that since Live is worth it to you personally, and that anyone who disagrees with your own oppinion, is wrong . . . THAT is fanboyish.

I never said that. I suggest you touch up on your reading comprehension skills. I disagree with the article because $50 a year (14 months, actually) IS worth it to me. Then I stated if you don't think so, don't pay it. How is that suggesting anyone with a conflicting opinion is wrong?

Obviously that was in response to "His"Servant77. Not sure why it quoted my post.

          HisServant77 Mar 12, 11
Lol, well let me retract my comment there. Sorry, misunderstood Phil's comment meant something else.

Retracting, I agree a bit. If someone likes Live, then yeah it's worth it to them.

But the article itself, saying there there's a better-value option than Live, is a fact.

          HisServant77 Mar 12, 11
Well, Phil, if you read my second comment you would have read that I admitted I misread your comment and I re-said something else. No need to get emotional and attack someone who already admitted to a very simple mistake. I even said I agreed with you.

It is factual in the sense that a competitor is offering a comparable service for free. It's obviously worth it if you only have a 360 or need to play 360 exclusive games, but otherwise it really isn't.

That would be one less game for some of us. That's one reason I didn't get a 360.

        Fatal Error Mar 12, 11
The reason it's not worth it is because you can get it free from other consoles. That's the ONLY reason it's not worth it and the reason for the article, I figure. If the PSN was really far behind XBL then the article would be way off but the fact of the matter is that there isn't much reason to pay $50 a year (if you do yearly subscribtion) when you can get about the same service for free. The only real reason to pay for XBL is if you want to play online and only have a 360 or you want to play 360 exclusive games online.

or if you want to have the option of cross game chat, being able to talk to friends no matter what both of you are doing, which PS3 still doesnt have in every game yet.

also 360 has more unique users. PS3 might have more accounts but some players will have more than 1 account.

Shattered, for you to have reasons not to buy a 360 has the unspoken premise that you actually considered at one point buying a 360. Which is like Hitler saying he considered buying a Dreidel.

have seen your pro-360-everyone-else-is-PS3-fanboy face in a long time. you make a lot of hitler references when it comes to calling someone a PS3 fanboy... it just seems odd, considering how much of a pro-360 person you are...

Ultimately, I think it depends mostly on where you friends are. If you don't have many friends on PSN but do on Live, then you'd lean toward using Live. And the same for the opposite.

Unless of course you don't care about gaming with friends.

I have both XBL and PSN, the difference? Not much unless you pay for them.

Sony have PSN+ now and have started adding some nice features to that which normal members can't get, the same way Microsoft is doing with XBL Gold.

The way I see it, I pay my XBL monthly and £5 a month coming out of my account doesn't even get noticed, anyone who complains about it really is either a hater or a very very poor person.

PSN is good too, it's just I prefer being able to talk to my friends no matter what game I play instead of having to play the same game.

It's no doubt to me that cross game chat will probably become a PSN+ member only thing, just like storing your game saves has became.

In a nutshell after reading the article, it all seems a bit like it's coming from someone who has dislike for Microsoft, I'd also like to say HisServant is right in the fact that it depends were your friends are. For me most of my friends are on XBL and that's why I see myself mainly buying multiplayer games for my Xbox360 than I do my PS3.

I personally don't want to be talking to some person who is playing a different game to you.

If someone's not playing the same game as me then I don't want to be talking to them.Though I would rather not talk to anyone while playing a game full stop.

I definitely understand, it can be distracting.

But, if you're good friends with someone, it's great to chat with them without making either one of you play the same game at the same time. But usually that's only friends that you've reached the level of friendship where your conversations extend further than just chatting strategy in the current game you're playing.

I agree with Gamesta100, cross game chat really serves no purpose to me. I can text/call my friends whenever I want I don't need them bugging me while i'm trying to game.

That and I preferr to keep my gaming life and my non gaming life separate.

When I'm playing games I don't want to be talking about what's going on in my life and stuff like that. Also when I'm out with friends, I don't want to be spending half the day talking about games.

To me there's my gaming life and my social life and while I do mix them both together, I preferr to keep them separate.

what about people on your friends list that you dont know in real life? what if you get done playing COD or something with them and you all just stay in the party talking to each other while you go on to play something else alone? ive done that several times and its nice when you can switch games without having to worry about the chat ending or getting messed up while you all exit the game.

Well I rarely play MP so there's not many times I play games with friends anyway.Plus all my friends on PSN are people I don't know in real life.None of my real life friends play video games very much.

Even when I do play online, once a game is over I don't care if we stop talking with each other anymore.

The fact is that most of my conversation's on PSN are when I'm not playing anything.

Yes because obviously they are lying about their perspective, right? The bottom line by them was pretty simple, which is that generally speaking XBL's price isn't justified based purely on its own merits. There's no reason to try to read into it any more than that.

LOL just joking man. i didnt read the article but hopefully they are making sure to express that this is just their OPINION, not like they are stating it as a fact because it isnt a fact. its up to the individual to decide if its worth it or not to them.

Xbox Live is just better than PSN imo and I use both consoles regularly (actually my PS3 more than my 360 because I'm replaying Demons Souls). When I'm on PSN.. even when I'm alone I've never felt part of a community. I don't know why but XBL has this certain charm to it that draws you in.

And cross-game chat is amazing and fun, and the people who say that they don't need it have never been in an Xbox Live party with a bunch of bros. It's hilarious and fun, and I was disappointed when I found out PSN didn't have that feature
    • 0
      Fatal Error Mar 18, 11
I certainly don't notice any charm. I think what you're noticing is that you have more friends on your XBL list than on the PSN. At the very least, that's the experience I had but it's been shifting over to PSN these past years.

        Paradox Mar 18, 11
Not really. My friends in real life use Xbox Live but all of the friends online that I regularly socialize with on Neo and on PSN... are on PSN.

Really don't get why some PS3-only owners have to get really mad on topics like this.

Games aren't exclusive to me anymore since I have a 360, PS3, and a decent gaming PC =/

          Fatal Error Mar 18, 11
I don't think any PS3-only owners are getting mad on the subject (unless there are some in this thread but I've been skimming because it's about 10 pages of reading). I just don't see any real "charm" about XBL at all, I mean...it's just a network that people game on. I guess you could be talking about the fact it has a bit of a more "dedicated" interface for certain things but I dunno, I don't really feel "connected" to people when I game online anyways.

Yes I have never been in an XBL party but back when I was in a Resistance clan, we used to have tons of fun just talking and being idiot's.

So you can't really say that those of us who don't care about the feature have never been in a similar situation on PSN.
