While everybody and their mom is waiting for the new Nintendo 3DS to hit the states, not everybody seems to realize that the Big N has hit some bad notes when it comes to the portable scene on multiple occasions.

Nintendo’s first attempt (and failure) at bringing 3D to video-gaming began with the Virtual Boy. Using chromatically different colors to create the illusion of depth, they decided to make every game red to make things easy on the eyes. Even still, turning up the brightness settings was (and still is) a must just to see the crappy graphics and cheese-tastic 3D special effects.

Considering how long Nintendo have been in the handheld market its quite an achivement that someone can't even get together a list of 5 handhelds that were failures.

Also I wouldn't even count the micro, it just had bad timing against it. It was actually a pretty good handheld.

In my opinion Nintendo have faired a lot worse over the years in the home console market than the handheld market. I mean for the most part other than the Virtual Boy I can't think of many huge failures yet from a sales point of view both the N64 and Gamecube were huge mistakes. They got it right somehow with the Wii, but after the release of the Gamecube Nintendo were really looking like one trick ponies in the home console market failing to replicate the success of the SNES.

N64 was a mistake? How you figure?

Gamecube for certain though, between lackluster first party and third party support save for about a half dozen truly great games. Not to mention that horrible controller.

They have had more missteps in the handheld market than they should considering they've not had any real competition.

I think you can make an argument that a lot of individual consoles are crap as well. Like all their recent first generation ones. The brick DS and the original advance, they always release newer sleeker versions that really shit on early adopters who now have a bigger crappier version.
