I doubt they will really. I mean this past week at GDC we saw PC graphics take yet another step up.. When you consider that the dream is Hollywood CGI visuals in real-time, consoles and PC will not stop until Pixar can make a film and port the tie in game with the exact same visuals as the film.

I'm with you on that. Not only that, but I mean come now . . . gamers will never die, and gamers have specific wants and desires, and won't settle for JUST games from the iphone and so forth. His focus is on gameplay only. But we all know gamers wouldn't sacrifice everything else for that alone.

I think console gaming will continue on until the end of time However, I DO think the only major change we'll see is the possibility of a conglomeration of the gaming companies. The gaming companies may very well merge and work together to begin developing consoles that are too busy competing against PC gaming, to worry about competing amongst each other.

I think rather than the consoles dying like that, this will be more like the last time we see dedicated gaming systems since they're turning into home multi-media centers.

I think you're right about that. Rather the death of them as we know it. Where they become too much a center of all entertainment rather than just a game machine.

I do think that they will really start extending the cycles a lot more, they already have really, but even more so.

I think they should extend them at this point, we've hit a level of graphic fidelity that's great even if its not hollywood level cg and games cost enough to develop as it is without hitting some kind of next generation level. The longer you wait it out this gen, the more affordable it will become and the more diversity you'll see as that happens.

Sure there will be those that complain(mostly looking at the PC crowd and the "consoles dumb down games" ideology) but you can't please everyone.

so 1 game system that plays any games, the way a DVD player plays any movie regardless of the production company?

Well that would never happen, since Msoft, Ninty and Sony won't allow it; exclusives are pretty much the only thing separating them.

I think was Xeros means is instead of getting a DVD player, a music system, a Blu-ray player and a gaming system, people will just get them in one package in the way PS3's were meant to be sold but which never really took off.

yes i can see that, in fact theres really no way for that NOT to happen. its almost that way now as it is with PS3 and 360. i believe Hulu is bringing an app out for the consoles too so that adds watching TV to the list of things you can do.
