Escort quests, something that has become insanely popular in games for the last two generations of consoles. Goozernation has put together a list of games with escort quests, include, ICO, Dead Rising, Resident Evil 4, and Enslaved, The problem here is there is no standard for games, most of the time the NPC is a useless burden and makes the game almost unplayable. Should developers due away with the escort missions? Should there be some sort of standard?

I'm not a fan of them, though for some reason, I didn't mind it at all in ICO. Probably because that was all part of the gameplay. But RE4, MGS2, portions of Bayonetta, I didn't like it too much. Well, in MGS2 I just threw Ema in a corner and just cleared out the guards, so that wasn't so bad. I guess I just really hated it in RE4.

They can be cool under certain conditions, but they're usually lame.

If it weren't for the escort mission in MGS4, I probably would've played through the game twice as many times as I did. I suppose it was technically more of a "following" mission than escort, though...

I thought of it more as getting escorted rather than doing the escorting.

Well, it's not like he was protecting you, which is sort of a defining factor in the term "escort", but I suppose I can agree with you.

Either way, it was somewhat of an escort mission, and, after the first couple of times, it becomes extremely tedious and boring. That is to say, it became tedious and boring to me.

Good point, so what do we call what Rat Patrol was doing for us in the first level then?

Hmm, well, you're fighting alongside them, but you did have to somewhat protect them because they didn't have infinite life if I remember correctly. At the same time, they did help you get through the level so...

Shit. That's an interesting question you've got there.

However, in my first comment, I was talking about following the guy for most of Act 3. I'm sure you knew that, but I just thought I'd make it clear.

I did but I sorta dunno how to look at it, I can't recall if he was ever in any danger aside from Snake needing to take out the occassional patrol. And Rat Patrol only ever died when Snake got curious about how good Ed was at catching bullets with the back of his head...

I've never found an escort quest which I've particularly disliked. But maybe I've just been lucky enough with the games I've picked.

So basically I don't think there's any reason why games shouldn't include them.

Not a fan of them, I think it's alright if the AI isn't brain dead or if the game doesn't have a lot of glitches, but most of the time the developer can't pull it off well =/
