Longview also has a point. Why bother giving shooter fans a free shooter if they're not going to play it? If a shooter fan loves COD, he's not going to switch off for another shooter just because it was free. Better to make the free game something different so that it's actually worth using.

Simply getting PSN back is reward enough for most shooter fans. All they want is to get back on the servers and start pwning nubs again.

Plus, you can't give out millions of free copies of a brand-new headlining game. Giving something like that out for free robs the developers of the profit they need to compensate for the development costs. The games they are offering are ones that have been out for some time, and offering them for free doesn't really hurt the developer.

Map packs and DLC, CoD-related PSN avatars/icons, shooter related themes and thus forth would have worked just as well.

Nobody cares about icons and themes, and the DLC and Map Packs would be useless to large numbers of people who don't own the games. This is also ignoring the fact that Sony promised full fledged games, not expansion packs, as well as that all this would require the third party developer to support Sony, with huge losses to it's income.

I have a younger cousin, a casual gamer who spends his gaming time on CoD and the like. A child, like most of the people who play those games, and he'd have absolutely loved to have a shooter theme or some shooter icons so his PS3 could look '1337 lololol'

You people seem to be misconstruing what I'm saying (which especially *bleep*ing hilarious for you, Red, considering exactly how many people misconstrue what you say constantly); I'm not saying they should have done that and that shooter fans are owed anything, alright? People should be grateful for what they've got and frankly they paid for a PS3, they don't pay for the PSN service, so unless they have PS+ they have no right to bitch and moan about anything to do with the blackout.

But if you're trying to win back a demographic (which in this case is to say, online users) it would make sense to give away free things that they would actually appreciate, rather than stuff they won't.

Interest doesn't come into it though. I hate sports games for instance, but I would still pick one over icons or themes for any of my favourite franchises, no question.

And as a side note, if someone really can't summon any interest in any of the games offered, then I'm surprised they own a console. There's a game for almost every genre.
