Zelda Informer takes a moment to stop and wonder whether the massive audience that turned up to buy games like Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, and particularly New Super Mario Bros. Wii has been getting the shaft by Nintendo. Has Nintendo been missing out on golden opportunities to reel in the real core audience?

Nintendo [has created] a separate "core" myth - that "core" games are made in 3D. You can tell this from their direction with the Mario series: there wasn't a real Super Mario Bros. game for almost 15 years! Instead, we got Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, which while I loved both definitely weren't Super Mario Bros. Nintendo seems to have spent the last decade or so thinking that 3D Mario is the new core Mario, and that they don't need Super Mario Bros. anymore.

Eh.. Whenever someone mentions core gaming to me I think real games. Maybe casual gaming has destroyed certain things for me, but when I look at Mario and Zelda these days they are quintessentially casual experiences. So in that regard Nintendo have abandoned the core market, but in a way you could say they never supported it in the first place.

Twilight Princess could have been imo, the old ones were a lot more difficult.

I really don't see how you can call Twilight Princess or any Zelda a "Casual" game, especially the older ones, try playing Master Quest and tell me that's casual.

Twilight Princess was the epitome of casual compared to Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time.
