When Music Makes the Moment

A recent article on Billboard listed the 25 Greatest Video Game Songs of All time, but limited themselves to true bands. What songs through gaming's history do you hold in your heart forever? Read in and compare, then add your own!

Recently, GoozerNation's own Mike Deenen linked the rest of us to a Billboard article entitled "The 25 Best Video Game Songs Ever". While an opinion, and a worthwhile one at that, they intentionally limited themselves to direct tracks that have been created/recorded by bands that have been popular on the radio. No MIDIs, no covers or readaptations, merely what they classified as "real songs".

I genuinely feel that they missed out on a lot by limiting themselves there. Yes, they cater to a different audience: the music crowd. But in a list of 25 songs, 90 percent of them came from either Tony Hawk, Grand Theft Auto, or music games such as Guitar Hero. There are many games in which the music makes the moment. You may have fun if you were a deaf gamer, yes, but the emotional outpouring that a good score crafts within a game can sometimes even trump the end-product gameplay. Therefore, I now present to you my personal list of Music Moments: where the background audio ultimately crafted the memory that I now cherish forever.

    I think it would be really hard for me to list my 25 favorite soundtracks. I love a lot of retro tracks from Mario, Kirby and a few other games.

    The song I remember the fondest, and one which fit the situation to the T was the music that played during the final battle with Rez in Gex: Enter the Gecko. I felt that music made that battle. I know there are hundreds of other examples, but I remember this one the best from my youth.

    If ever a song made the moment, it was One Winged Angel. I remember getting to the final battle in FF7 and even my little brother was lured into the room by that epic music to watch my battle against Sephiroth. He didn't know what the hell was going on but he was into it.

    One of my most memorable was actually made by me. I was playing Metal Gear Solid 4 and I equiped the iPod and listened to the theme song from MGS Portable Ops. It was during a little war with people dying all over the place, a helicopter flying above blowing people up. The music fit the moment so well and it made one of the most epic moments ever.
