OXCGN's Nicholas Capozolli looks at Naughty Dog's upcoming new title The Last Of Us and wonders if it resembles too much other post-apocalyptic media that already exists. Is it the right direction for Naughty Dog?

I’m not quite sure what I think about Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us, and that’s odd.

I mean, I’m a well-documented fan of post-apocalyptic fare, doubly so if it’s of the zombie variety. I’m also enamored with Naughty Dog‘s work, particularly in the Uncharted series.

The Last Of Us seems to be cut from the same high-quality cloth, too. So why is it that I don’t find myself instantly smitten with this game the way that I have with their previous works?

The settings and story of Uncharted was identical to lots of other media, it's the characters and the way the story is told that makes it interesting. I have no worries here.

Quite true. What people, and perhaps even developers, don't realize is that the characters are what make a story unique, not the setting. We've seen that even extravagant alternate planets and crazy settings will not help a game if the characters are flat and boring.
