Do Next Gen Game Consoles Need a Disc Drive?

There has been a lot of talk about what will happen with sony and microsoft will they release new systems soon or at least talk about them. well we have some info on why they might or might not need a disc drive and what it would mean for all of us.

As Apple's iOS App Store has shown, there's huge interest in downloadable games, both on behalf of consumers and developers. You can bet that if Apple's living room devices, either a proper Apple television set, or today's Web set-top box, ever support gaming, there won't be discs involved. And Microsoft itself already supports some downloadable games for the Xbox today, and Windows 8 apps tomorrow, plus plenty of streaming video.

    In my opinion it would need one, just because Apple would probably do anything in their power to make it "the best experience." If all games were exclusively downloadable wouldn't that make people with little access to internet/wi-fi capability, screwed? Plus, I really would assume that there would be some type of DDrive on it, for movies, etc.

    This would also basically force everyone to buy bigger hard drives, and if you play a lot of games, you would have to buy multiple hard drives. Apps don't take up a lot of space. Games on the other hand, do.

    yes they do. internet service is still not where it should be, at least in the US, so those who have crappy connections will have a hard time getting games if theyre download only.

    plus, i really like the idea of being able to sell a game i'm done with. paying $60 for a game you downloaded and thus cant sell later and recoup money is totally lame.

    i personally think they need them for a different reason. 1st apple is quickly becoming the biggest game seller and its all digital so to think no one can do that is to not think about whats already going on. the question really is are they going to change there sales marketing strategy. you see the reason you are not able to download new games like GOW3 CODMW3 BF3 ect ect is because Microsoft needs to make profit for the game seller retailers. sure they allow inde games release direct on the consoles but those games do not take away from the gamestops the targets and alike. Those stores do not make good profit off the console systems they only sell the systems to sell the games/accessories. that's where the profit comes.
