The Play Vault's Simon explains the history of this little known genre from it's origins to one of the most novice-friendly rougelike games out there: Dungeons Of Dredmor.

It’s definitely not a genre that most gamers today will be too familiar with because you’d be hard pressed to find a roguelike in your local video game store. It’s not something the big developers of video games are focusing on either because you won’t find one amongst the Battlefields, Assassin Creeds and Bioshocks that populate the shelves.

Regardless of there lack of popularity, the roguelike genre is still going strong. While other genres of yesteryear have (sadly) withered away from public interest, the roguelike has stood the test of time, continuing to maintain a cult-like fanbase across the globe.
