The debate on the accuracy of the Nintendo Wii controls has been on the boil ever since the console was unveiled by Nintendo back at E3 2005. It's occassional blips are clear for everyone to see, but will players continue to overlook more of the same poor standard of sensitivity in Wii Sports boxing and muddled controls in dozens of other games?

This week, veteran games developer David Perry criticised the Wii Remote as being sloppy and inaccurate. The Wii is fast approaching its first birthday, and while it is only natural to expect ropey controls from developers getting to grips with a completely new input device during its infancy, will, as Perry notes, those millions who put up with the odd Wii Remote blunder continue to overlook such issues?

Do Wii owners want their ordinary controllers back?

I do think this is a problem. Honestly though I never really liked the wii controller. For a few reasons. Mainly though the fact that I'm sick atm and get really bored not doing anything. So I game but there's no way I'd feel like playing Wii. So I'm glad I have a 360. I imagine this will get better though. It's just a question of how much better.

It works well for things like RE4 though. But those games have been around since duck hunt. I think they mean Red Steel and shit where you just exaggerate some crazy slash and it does it after a second.

Frankly, if a game has sloppy controls, I just don't buy it.

However, saying that the remote itself is "sloppy and inaccurate" is completely untrue. From a technical aspect, the accelerometers are extremely precise (it can sense movements as small as 40 nanometers, and it sends the data quite frequently). However, in practise, we can see that Metroid Prime 3 isn't sloppy and inaccurate. In fact, it has the most accurate controls of any first-person game (at least on a console). Neither is Resident Evil 4. Even Zelda isn't sloppy and inaccurate (it doesn't really use the motion controls heavily, but it isn't sloppy or inaccurate). Playing the Godfather: Blackhand Edition, I don't know how I enjoyed the XBox version. It isn't sloppy, and you have much more accuracy now that you have full control over your attacks, instead of just replacing button presses with waggle. You can know even control the hands individually, and it senses different attacks from different directions, and your character attacks accordingly.

Sure, most games have inaccurate control, but then again, I avoid them. I won't put up with them. However, Perry seems to be blaming the Wii controllers much more than the developers rushing their games. I agree on the fact that many games have sloppy controls, but developers have pulled off some great controls as well, both first and third parties. It can be done when a game's budget isn't ridiculously low and time frame extremely short. It can be done, but developers have to stop looking at the console as an opportunity for a quick buck.

All I know is when I played the Wii over at my friends house it was a constant battle to anything to do with motion sensing.

Some games use it well but most do not

Wow, this a complete Generalization. Most games I have played have worked perfectly. Resident Evil 4? Great control. Loz:TP? Good controls. Only games I have had trouble with were Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Wii sports (which is just a demo, the control problem is understandable). Just because Some out of many wii games have crappy controls doesnt mean anything.

Resident Evil has fantastic controls, imo. I don't own any games where the controls suck.

Wii works fine when you're moving a crosshair around on a screen. It's the rest of the actions that are bad.

I definitely don't buy any games that has lousy control.

Yeah, I don't own a game where the controls don't work perfectly.

Basically, if the game is a crappy PS2-port created by some unknown 3rd party, don't buy it. It's as simple as that.

    Hell no.

If I want to play using an 'ordinary controller', I'll play my 360 or PS3.

Wii controls are fine it's the developers who just want to make a quick buck. Metroid Awesome controls, Twilight Princess great controls. Rayman a 3rd party game had solid controls along with Resi4 and Godfather.

you're in denial if you say you haven't ever had to repeat a 'motion' several times on occasion to get something to work properly in a game.

Not sure if it's my controller or not, but nunchuck swings don't register well on Zelda for me. Sloppy controls can get annoying, but yeah just avoid games with bad controls. And if the Wiimote is a big enough of a problem, then new ones can always be released.

Wii controls were fine for me whenever I play it at my friends house, I've had no problems with it.

Hmm, the controls are fine for me too, really. I haven't had any bad controls in any games, apart from Red Steel of course, as I think it's a little too sensitive, at times.

I've played on the Wii twice. Both times I hated it because of the horribly sensetive controls. Plus also half of the time the pointer is about 2 inches below where I point the Wiimote on the screen, coulda just been my friends controller but personally I think they suck.

      What games did you play?

If you were playing Red Steel, for example, he might of had the sensitivity on high for some reason.

I think it just differs from person to person, disregarding fanboys or not. I've tried the Wii out at my cousin's house and personally I just didn't like it. But whatever floats your boat I suppose.

What a ridiculous point of view. Did we go back to the D pad after a game screwed up analog stick controls? No. I think not.

I also disagree with the generalization that Wii games are judged to a different standard when it comes to control precision. I have seen plenty of reviews that blast games due to control issues, such as Red Steel. certainly more than I have seen that overlook them. Most every review I read will mention if they find any minor flaws, and whether or not that have an impact on the game.

What the hell? I seriously don't see a problelm in the flipping motion sensing control and I've owned it since release. It looks like someones just angry that Nintendo's doing well and is out to discredit everything about the system. Annoying twats >>.

I couldn't agree more with FFX, Gogetenks, and BBB. The fact is, many developers are still getting used to the machine. How can you expect every single game to be perfectly precise and never make a mistake?

The analog was a perfect example. It wasn't long before the bulk of games had a mastery of the new control method. I find it fairly entertaining that there are attempts like this to slander the Wii. What good does it do to point the finger at a system that has some (depending on opinions) bad games? I'll tell you. It makes Sony & 360 fans feel better about their mediocre games, failing hardware (360, obviously), and the fact that the Wii is reaching for the stars.

EVERY system has terrible games with all kinds of problems. Its impossible to dispute that. Its like saying "I've played several PS2 games that had awkward, unresponsive controls. The PS2 must be one slob of a console." Frankly, it's ignorant to jump to such a conclusion.

As of yet, I've played one- yes, one game where the controls truly frustrated me. That was Carnival Games. However, the controls were also realistic. You swing your arm that way to do this and such and such- so its possible I just hate carnivals. Oh, and before anyone claims I haven't played many Wii games... At this point I own about twenty of them and have played more than that. Heh...

Gee. A thumbs down because I don't like the controls. Like I said, whatever people like is what they like. Stop crying.
