  Most companies don't delay their games. It's other places making up release dates for them. Once a developer sets a released date it's very likely that's when the game releases.

  Yes we do know why it was delayed;
  
  - They needed additional development time because there were bugs and things wrong, also things they wanted to add but couldn't if they committed to an october release
  
  - Some problems with the 360 version and also some different problems with the PS3 version
  
  - They wanted to add multiplayer modes (2-16 player deathmatch)
  
  - So they didn't have to compete with Halo 3 dominating the market, albeit GTA4 will outsell Halo 3, it wouldn't have gotten as many sales if sold now.

    Multiplayer wasn't anywhere near being a prime reason for delay. They announced they'd have multiplayer near the game's announcement.

    They didn't want to compete with Halo 3? ARE YOU MAD?! GTA IV will easily slaughter Halo 3! And they would have sold more, than Halo 3. Halo 3 is a six hour game then bang you're done! Try that with GTA IV.

      Aren't you forgetting about the multiplayer that keeps some gamers occupied for years? GTA would have sold less copies than it could have if it was released at the same time as Halo 3, that's pretty much a fact.

    Yes. Yes they should. Do as they promise. Release GTAIV. With buggy textures, constant popups, terrible loading times, and half the city missing due to glitches in the system.
    
    Right on. Because that's exactly what happened when they showed the game two months before it was expected to be out.
