It's not exactly something you'd want, but it seems that Microsoft want their NEXT-GEN Console to go the same way as the LAST-GEN Console. Granted the PS2 is a marvel in itself, being the all time highest selling console, and is still going strong with a new model being released soon, Microsoft are hoping the same type of achievement with their console.

Something they have to remember is that they could have even achieved that with the XBOX had they not retracted support for it, and stopped making it ;)

"Look at the PS2; they've gone long-time and seem to have pretty good legs on what they are doing," Mount told a BMO Capital Markets conference on interactive entertainment.

Well why the *bleep* didn't they continue to support the XBOX? They could have if they wanted to. Poor decisions.

They still have a lot to learn from Sony clearly who's been doing nothing but putting out exceptional console one after another.

The PS1 was amazing, the PS2 is the best selling console of all time and they're still profiting from it.

Plus even though the PS2s had some trouble reading discs it was easily fixed and didn't involve actual hardware failure like the 360.

No, even with continued support from themselves, the XBOX would never have had the same success as PS2. Sony was too deep in the game. I just think its funny that they've actually come out and acknowledged Sony's dominance.

But it's stupid to think that they couldn't have continued to make profit by selling a cheaper XBOX to people that haven't owned a console before.

The slimmer PS2s aren't targeted for console gamers that are on the up and up, they are targeted to new gamers, I sell them all the time and not for the big games, for the bargain bin games, for the childrens games.

Microsoft could have sold a bunch of revamped slimmer XBOXs and stuff if they had at least tried. There are plenty of good games that would have sold.

The difference is the PS2 has the support. If Microsoft kept the box alive, so to speak, wouldn't it be similar to the Dreamcast? Wouldn't they just be putting money into a bottomless pit?

No, they wouldn't. New gamers could play Halo, Halo 2, Project Gotham Racing, and the various other games that people enjoyed on the XBOX for a much cheaper price. All XBOX games would be preowned and cheap and the XBOX itself could be redesigned to be smaller and more user friendly that way, not to mention cheaper. It would have benefited just like the PS2.

Are you seriously Illmatic? If they kept support for the original xbox many people would still be using that. Instead MS got rid of the system forcing every xbox owner to get a next gen system as well as people who never had a xbox before. This was the stupidest move MS could ever make. I know me and Dez have had problems but i totally agree with him. It would benefit MS and new gamers. Thats why MS will never have a successful business in this industry like Sony. If they do the same with 360 than there sales will never increase more than 25 million worldwide for each system. Im not trying to be a fanboy but thats why xbox only sold that much in its lifespan. They didn't give it support enough.

They'll need lower prices, and not to mention better support, to even get close to those sales.

If they want to even get past the Wii, they'll have to add more family-oriented games to their mix.

I doubt Microsoft will ever be able to touch the Nintendo or Sony, their customer service, and more importantly manufacturing methods don't even compare to Nintendo's and Sony's capabilities. If they stop cutting corners and improve their overall product, they might actually have a shot.

      Totally agree.
The PS2 was a great games console, and any console that achives the same success will be great.

If they want that success maybe they should do a total recall and stick hardrives in all of them as well as fix those damn overheating problems

      Don't expect that to happen.
