Finally! Someone with credibility in the gaming industry talks about the terrible, terrible job done by gaming media as a whole.

The linked to page is a recent blog post by Tycho, stating his opinions on the gaming media ndustry. This was spurred on my recent reviews of the game "Assassin's Creed", a game I'm sure most of us have heard about. The writing itself is brilliant, and exposes the corrupt ignorance of gaming magazines and websites that so many read religiously. The truth is, they're just in it for the money and will do whatever they need to get that money....Including make hastily scrawled reports saying games are worse then they really are, or promote games that are trash just because the game's creator is paying the magazine a lot of money.

Media employee going off on a rant because he thinks that Michael 'Gabriel' Krahulik insulted his review of a game? Check.

Valid points as to why the method used by game reviewers is terrible? Check.

Argument spread out over several links located on the linked to page? Check.

In essence, the post that started all the trouble asserts three things:

1. Game Reviewers Are Wrong
2. They Will Always Be Wrong

and the next one, the one that still brings out the sweat on their forehead,

3. Their Method For Reviewing Games Is Corrupt In An Imperceptible Way.

My partner in this enterprise is a base and vile aggressor, and I must often make peace, defend my honor, or assert my status as a unique being. This is actually a rare case where he and I actually agree on the game in question, unlike, say, Call of Duty 4 (whose merits I was never able to convince him of) or Mass Effect (which I essentially had to force him to play).

Yeah, that's surely true. I mean, I look at some reviews to get a general sense of what the game is about if anything, but I don't care if it get's average ratings, or the best of the best.

Look at the Halo 3 reviews...the game is good, but not perfection good. Then there's games like Assassin's Creed, but it did recieve 7's and such, so that's telling us that it did get honest ratings.

Simply put, if they don't rate certain games high, like say...the ever-so-popular upcoming GTAIV, or again, Halo 3, then they will lose their readers. Guess it's all about business and popularity...

^^ that would work however GTA is a bigger franchise and has been around longer than Halo, so they deserve the high score unlike halo.

This also applies to rush playing games to meet deadlines, i think everyone who does that should either get fired or sued. Stop rushing playing games, and start actually playing them. Your not going to review a game right for this. IE gamespot and IGN.

Sooo, by your reasoning, the longer a game series is around, the higher the score should be? Wouldn't that mean that FF has been getting 10/10's for a very long time now?

No what i mean was, GTA isn't all hype and it deserves the scores it gets cause from the first GTA its been a sick franchise and always try to out do the last game. Thats my point. Halo 3 or 2 didn't really have the WOW factor above its old games, Halo 2 was just 1 with slightly better things and same as 3 to 2.

GTA has always pushed the envelope to be bigger and better than its predecessors. GTA SA was bigger and better to VC and 3. GTA4 will be bigger and better than SA etc get my point. I also did state it was a bigger franchise.

People pay too much attention to reviews in my opinion; and not just on games, on movies and stuff too. People have their preferences of what they like and what they don't like and you could be completely different.

Simple, but very true. People do indeed put far too much faith in reviews, and because of such, a number of good games go unplayed. While people are afraid of stating what a pile of crap certain "highly recommended" games are.

      It's even worse with movies.

And music? Hell man, I think "reviewing" music has got to be the most illogical thing I've ever heard of. I honestly hope not many people take "music reviews" seriously.

This is very true everything revolves around the money now in days!!

I personally think it's wrong to cheat someone into buying a game that is horrible, because you decided to lie in a reveiw.

This is why I stopped paying attention to these reveiwers.

Reviewers don't cheat you into what to and what not to buy. They sway your opinion more towards or against a certain game. They focus more on the flaws and exaggerated them, rather than give it credit.

This is why I love Penny-Arcade.

There's nothing wrong with taking reviews into consideration before buying a game, but it seems like more and more nowadays we can't trust what the big name review sites have to say, or even some of the smaller ones.

Good thing we have game rentals.

Overall fact, rent games before buying them. And don't read any sort of reviews. If you think you may like it rent it and check it your self. Most reviews is all opinions and the only ones that matter is yours alone. And people like on this site and Neo that you can trust. Other than that no one should even listen to these reviews. I personally don't rent games anymore due to the fact around where i live its 9 bucks to rent a game for 5 days, talk about rip off. Thats why i love Neo and this site people know what games are good and they give you the unbiased and honest take on the game. I hate the reviews i have seen especially gamespot and IGN. I could give two rats rear's about their opinion since mostly nowadays reviewers tend to rush playing the game to meet deadlines and by doing so rates good games poorly and bad games good. A good example is Assassins Creed.
