thatvideogameblog.com Editorial : Need For Speed going down?

StarJet | January 14, 2008 | Blog | PC Playstation 2 Misc
Need For Speed. Regarded as one of the top racing game franchises ever made. The question is, is that fact true any more? NFS fans everywhere were greedily awaiting NFS : ProStreet. But did EA satisfy their hunger? I think not. I only hope that they make up for it with the PSP version which is having a release date of Feb 2008.
When I first spun up Pro Street and began playing, I was expecting another street racing game, an open city to explore, jerk off racers who wanted to best you, and all that fun stuff that we had come to see in the series ever since NFS: Underground, but when I entered my first race day and realized all the races were legit circuit races, I had to ask: did Electronic Arts get threatened or in any other manner get in trouble for using street racing in its games, despite the public service announcements in the beginning of each game? Is there a reason why they are moving the game’s environment off the streets and into legit circuits?

Bottom line is, Pro Street does not uphold the expectations that Need for Speed fans have of the series. It lacks the story, the police chases, the various game modes, and emphasizes more strict and realistic racing ability on your part, that the game has lost the classic NFS touch.

Well that sucks...I imagine they went in a completely different direction in that latest installment, especially with 'Pro' in it's title name.

Just make a third Underground, heh.

I found the first Underground to be slightly above the second, but they did both get good reviews and I believe decent sales. Seems to me like NFS went in a non-arcade type racer style recently, to match up with PGR or something. I wouldn't mind a third Underground or Hot Pursuit. ^^

NFS has gone downhill from the second one. Just not good enough.

I agree, they just haven't been living up to their previous titles recently, which is unfortunate. I look forward to new one, hopefully it'll make up for the last couple.

I miss NFS Hot Pursuit as well. I miss running from the cops while racing, kinda had a Cannonball run feel to it. Now it just has a Fast and Furious feel to it, and that's not my thing.

I actually always thought Need For Speed was overrated. I remember the very early games on PC and thought they controlled very unrealistically and slow with a bad sense of speed. The series definitely got better as it got older though and I really like Underground. Prostreet is kind of a yawn.

Well, you can't actually say that Need For Speed was overrated. I remember playing Need For Speed 2 SE when I was a little kid. I just loved racing around in the FZR2000.

you can if you want to, but i think it's pretty much not fair. need for speed games were pretty good from the old days itself.

not having a storyline is not bad, but having one is infact quite a good thing. and need for speed storylines are not that bad as you say.

Why did they mess with success when they went away from open street racing? I mean thats why i bought the game for the street racing no street racing is a turnoff.
