It's a question that many have asked themselves, how long will the internal memory of the Wii last? Unlike the PS3 which has a minimum of 20GB internal memory for the OS/Game Saves/Downloads and other items, the Wii only has 512MB, which is used for all the downloads and saves. With over 200 games currently availalbe on the Virtual Console, this seriously limits the number of games you can store on the internal memory itself.

Though you can always delete and redownload (onto the machine you origionally purchased it to with), or transfer it to an SD card, to play the game, you will always have to put it back into the internal memory of the Wii to play the game.

VC Reviews takes a look at the problem, and the possible solutions that Nintendo could offer in the future.

Since the release of the Wii many tech-savvy fans have pointed out that the two USB ports present on the console could open up a whole world of opportunities; one recent firmware update granted the ability to use USB keyboards on the machine, for example. Surely it would be a simple thing for Nintendo to allow Wii owners to hook up external hard drives for storage?

Given that the save files and downloadable titles hardly take up any room, it's not al that bad. Read the article for the full impact of the internal memory size.

Given how cheap memory is in general it would have made more sense to include at least a gig, if not more.

Well...why not upgrade the SD card? Seriously, it can't be that hard...right? In fact, isn't that a Memory Stick? Or does the Wii actually use a specific kind of card?? Because Memory sticks can reach all the way up to 8 whole gigabytes. I mean you can't really tell me that the PSP can hold more memory storage than the Wii.

You don't get it, the Wii has an internal memory of 512, you can transfer things to an EXTERNAL SD card, which is pictured, however you cannot run things off from the External device, you always have to copy it back onto your Wii to play.

Oh I see. That's a bit discouraging, unless you're always gonna be downloading and redownloading it doesn't sound half bad.

I never knew this about the Wii. Thanks for the article Krunal, it is very informative. I was considering getting the Wii for the family and the old school NES games, so hopefully this problem is addressed soon.

I wouldn't worry about NES games, since I don't believe even the highest games go over 1MB. Even SNES games aren't too large. Those games aren't a worry at all. N64 games do take up a fair bit of space, though, and WiiWare is definitely going to have some rather large games. I hope Nintendo just updates the firmware to allow you to directly read off of an SD card or, even better, use an external hard drive.

I still have some space left, but it is eventually going to run out. There is no reason to limit the internal memory like this when a firmware update is all the Wii needs. Nintendo keeps ignoring this, and it's getting ridiculous.

I didn't even know this. From a technical standpoint, The Wii really is behind the times.

From a technical standpoint the Wii is *bleep*ing expensive, i mean yes for the lack of a motion controller you can get an Xbox 360 something that is vastly more powerful for slightly more, and even a PS3 which is like 32 times more powerful than a PS2 or something stupid and thats about the Wii's spec (maybe its slightly higher), i mean the Wii is cool but for it's spec it should be cheaper a lot cheaper, since to be honest it is a Gamecube with a motion control, i personally don't think a controller is worth like $150, i dunno whatever the price would be minus the going rate for a Gamecube before it was taken from the shelves.

The Wii is nothing like the gamecube, even minus the motion control.

Wrong, it almost IS the GameCube. Christ, it has GameCube conroller slots.

I never really thought about that Existenz, good point. But wow i didn't think the internal memory was that low i though at least it was 512MB, i figured it had 1GB.

I have the Wii and I have not had any problem with the memory. It really isn't something to worry about.

I picked up a 2 gig SD card for 20 bucks, haven't had a problem since.

I guess the only good thing with that is that you don't actually have a limit on the number of times you can redownload a game from the store, it's unlimited... as long as you don't get a new Wii console that is.

But who wants to keep redownloading? It's a shame!

Something should be done about this. Get an attachment of some sort to help store games and such...I don't have to worry now since I barely have any VC games, but for the future.

A clear solution would be an external hard drive, but none have been developed yet.
