MTV Multiplayer discusses the Adventure Mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, entitled "The Subspace Emissary", and asks the question of whether or not it should receive its own fully featured sequel.

It’s a really great premise, but, by the end a few things hold it back from really reaching the pedestal worthy of its star power. The SSE mode is a really great addition to "Brawl", and an impressive evolution of the adventure mode from "Melee", but some glaring problems stand out.

Nevertheless, I want a sequel. I’ll explain why.

Expanding on that adventure would be great, so long as they don't cut off the next SSB sequel on the next Nintendo console because of it.

I enjoyed SSE though, especially with Co-Op.

I thought the SSE was horrible. I'm sure part of that was that me and a friend shotgunned through the second half the game in 5 hours straight.

Still, a lot of the plot didn't make any sense and it felt like really poor for the guy who wrote FF7.

Honestly they basically took Kirby Superstar and tried to force Smash Bros. mechanics in and it didn't really work well. Perhaps if it emphasized more actual Brawls than annoying enemies.

The story skipped around quite a bit. If they were to have made it longer, and with the leaps between unlocking characters longer, it would have been much better. Tabuu showing up was just weird, unexpected. I'd rather have a game build up slowly while introducing a boss character, than it building up fast and unleashing a new Nintendo character upon the world.

As long as they leave out the Great Maze, I'm for it. Also, some dialouge wouldn't hurt.

Eh, the Great Maze wasn't that bad. By the time you're done exploring the entire place to reveal the Bowser heads, you should only have about 2 more characters to fight.

It was an interesting way of making platformers relevant again. I definitely didn't mind it.

Yeah, a new writer would be nice too, wasn't that much depth in it.

How about actually letting Europe and Australia play Brawl first?

I think the story would have been more interesting if it had actually crossed into different Nintendo worlds. Perhaps the smash area in the beginning could act as a hub of some sort between the many exotic locations of the Nintendo universe. It would have been much more interesting if Link and Mario had to team up to fight the subspace army in defense of Peach's castle, instead of a generic "jungle" or "ruins", in my opinion.

Also, the reason Sonic was thrown in at the last minute, was because he was "literally" thrown into the game at the last minute. Sakurai has already been interviewed saying Sonic was a late addition to the game, well after the planning stages were complete. The basic shape of Subspace was already finished when Sonic "joined" Brawl, and the easiest way to get him in Subspace was to simply add him at the end.

i gave it some real thought, and then I realized: a standalone Subspace sequel would be an awful lot like Kingdom Hearts. No thanks, Nintendo, no thanks.

My fangasming during all the cutscenes and being able to watch these monumental video game characters meeting, fighting, and working together can not be overstated.

There was mild cursing, followed by the proclaimation that "This game is wicked...".

The sticker system seperated it from what would have been a thinner game. I'm only sad that the customization wasn't taken further and implemented in more ways. Trophies and stickers are practically useless by the time you beat the SSE. You'll never actually need to put stickers on certain characters because you get them at the very end of the game.

Throw in some dialogue, online co-op, RPG elements, actual locations from Hyrule, Mushroom Kingdom etc, deeper storyline that develops each character, also a branching storyline, and some plot twists, and I'd buy it.

No. A Smash title with no strong multiplayer? No thanks.

It wouldn't be a Super Smash Bros. title, though. It'd be a game dedicated to recreating and going beyond the experience of The Subspace Emissary.

So would it still be a platformer/fighter or something else?
