Things that suck about ... games! No, wait, game reviews!

StarJet | April 01, 2008 | Blog | Misc
Ever thought that game reviews don't properly serve their purpose of being helpful? Well, you probably aren't the only one who thinks so. The people over at www.thatvideogameblog.com have listed things that suck about video game reviews. And might I say, they are quite ... interesting?
Scores out of 100
Who do reviewers think they’re kidding when they rate a game out of 100? Do they honestly feel that they’re able to distinguish between games down to individual percentage points? They can’t. Reviewing games is not a scientific process, so using such enormous scales is quite frankly ridiculous. All it does is give fodder to fanboys to argue that their chosen game is 1% better than another.
Score breakdownsWhat is being suggested in a review when scores for Sound, Graphics, Gameplay etc. are given separately? That they all have equal weighting? That the reviewer understands the nebulous idea of ‘gameplay’, and is able to measure it? What the hell does ‘gameplay’ even mean? Even more laughable is when a Lastability category exists; playing a game for just a few days before reviewing it would only allow reviewers to make an educated guess surely. Time is the only judge of Lastability.
Metacritic/GamerankingsThey have simply become too powerful. By averaging the ratings of the biggest sites, they have managed to become the most trusted opinions on the web without having to write a single original word themselves! There is even talk of publishers applying pressure on gaming sites to score their games closer to the Metacritic/Gamerankings average, or what they guess the average will be. Self-fulfilling prophecy?

You can rarely trust game reviews, no matter where they're from. A game review is just one persons view on a game, and their opinion is quite possibly different to yours, so choosing whether or not to buy a game solely based on a handful of game reviews is just poor guesswork. There have been several games I've played and movies I've watched that I thoroughly enjoyed, but found later that they have average scores and some truly bad reviews on places like Metacritic. I still think of those games / movies in the same light, I just think less of reviews in general now.

Really, if you like the look of a game and want to know what it's like, either download a demo or go out and buy/rent it. In the least, it'll keep you entertained for a few hours, even if done poorly. Or, if you want a half-decent quantitative measure of a game, look at average user scores. A mass of players count for more than a handful of reviewers.

Mario is better than Halo, anyone that fails to see this just fails in general. Come on. The first 2 Halo games are solid but highly overrated, Halo 3 is the only one worthy of its praise.

jmaz stop trying to start a fight

As ACY3 said I too rarely trust reviews. I find it better to look at a range of user reviews. You get a more open view that way

How am I trying to start a fight? It's a fact. Get off my nuts. What if I had said, "what the *bleep*?!?! Halo is amazing! I mean Mario is good and all, but Halo is just on another level."

See things from both sides and stop being so ridiculous. Thumbing me down and what not.

    You do realize that:

    Mario - Platformer

    Halo - Shooter

It's like trying to compare Ratchet and Clank with Rainbow Six Vegas.

Either way, I've been trying to tell people that mainstream reviews are nothing to take seriously in the past, this only reinforces my point anyways.

It's difficult but possible. Mario helped pave the way for videogames, we're talking the whole industry.
Halo didn't do anything except get a whole lot of non-gamers into a pretty average game. Like, big props to Halo for getting a lot more people into gaming, but they should have still recognized it for the average FPS that it truly is.

Reviews suck though, they shouldn't be number based and I'm a firm believer in that. You can make up all the different reasons you want but at the end of the day all the reviewer should say is whether or not they enjoyed the game. That's all that matters. If only people weren't so lazy and the majority actually read more reviews then review scores wouldn't be such a problem.

All too often people rely on simply some stupid numerical value rather than actually reading what the people have to say which is so much more informative.

Your basically saying anyone who doesn't agree with you is a failure. I really don't give a *bleep* about whether you said Halo or Mario is better. It's just that with a attitude like that a flame war is bound to start sooner or later. You are also hypocritical

    Example

See things from both sides and stop being so ridiculous
    quote

Well no one says the reviewing a game is an exact science. But personally I'd prefer a score out of a 100 than a review with no numbers attached to it. You know that a game with 50 out of 100 score is going to suck, regardless of what your tastes are, and that game that scored 90 out of 100 is at least worth checking out.

I agree with all the points except the part about Metacritic/Gamerankings. I never really pay attention to single reviews as they are only one person's opinion. But it's handy seeing multiple people's opinions on a game, then having the scores/ratings averaged out to one big score. Heck, looking at the picture above, 72 sites reviewed Mario Galaxy and it still got a 97/100. That gives me a fair idea on whether the game is good or an absolute failure.
