72% of Americans are gamers?

StarJet | April 02, 2008 | Blog | Misc
You'd think a majority of people (mainly people like above 40s) would think games are a waste of time et cetera. But an NPD group research says otherwise. They say that in 2006, 64% of the American population played games of some form, and that it has risen to 72% now.

They also say that only 3% of them own a current-gen console. Also a fact they express is that how far online games became popular, online gamers are still a minority.

Wanna know what's even more interesting? They say that children below 12 years make up 25% of the online gaming community.
Videogames do finally seem to inching their way into the mainstream media. At least that’s the implication of an NPD Group Report that found that 72% of Americans played videogames of one form or another during 2007, up from 64% in 2006.

The report also shines a little light onto the hotheadedness of some gamers in defending their chosen hardware. Only 3% of those in the report claimed to own more than one current gen console. Here’s to hoping falling hardware prices will make consoles more affordable and quiet the little devils down.

The report also found that online gaming is on the rise, though not at the same pace. NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement,”Despite the buzz in the industry regarding online gaming, it is still relatively small compared to offline gaming. There is still a large, untapped market for gaming in general and online gaming in particular.”

Hehehe 64. Very interesting, especialy the fact that only 3% owns a current-gen console. The fact that 25% are under 12 is sort surprising. Games used to be for kids, but I guess since more voilent games are being realesed looks like it brough in more older gamers.

Games have never been for kids, the price point of all consoles is aimed at adults, the majority of all games were aimed at adults. Nintendo do aim at children but the rest do not, Sony, Microsoft, Sega, Panasonic, Colleco, Atari you name it they never aimed at children, their games and the price point showed this.

I bet that they just play little online games, like asteroids and such, not actual consoles.
