The Playstation 3, as we know, already covers many of the functions a typical PC is capable of: web browsing, IMing, online gaming, etc. So what's holding it back from altogether replacing your computer (and movie player while we're at it)? Heck, we can already turn it into a pseudo-laptop. Evidently it's just a better browser, native IM clients, and improved applications.

Make a really good web browser. The current browser is great for occasional use when you don’t have a PC handy, but realistically, no one would use the existing browser for their main web browsing. But what if the PS3 really did make a great browser that was nearly as good as a PC: fast, standards compliant, tabs, improved support for USB mouse/keyboard, search box, cookie management, all the preferences and options that power users want, and something that overall could be used as a primary browser. I don’t know if this is possible given PS3’s hardware design, but if they did this, people could use web applications for regular email, word processing, and spreadsheet functionality.

Impoved Music and Photo apps. PS3 has great music and photo features, but they still are missing many of the polish and features found in the better PC software such as iTunes, Windows Media, or Picasa.

IM. There are web clients, but the native clients work better. Also, people want to use their existing IM networks (AIM, Jabber, etc), not just the PSN network.

You could always install Linux, which should get you a lot of the features you want.

But I woul seriously like a Memory and Flash version update on the Browser though >_> And ability to cut/copy and paste (highlight text)....

I use it regularly because my old PC sucks....

As much as i love my PS3 i wouldn't go to say that those features come close to what a PC can do with them, the PC is a step above them in those departments like it should be.

You could definitely run a PS3 as a PC/computer, that much is obvious to anyone who knows what they are doing. Now, as far as replacing your PC, no. The lone factor that separates the two is the ability to upgrade. On a consumer level, the Cell processor is still beasting what is offered in full fledged PCs, but the PS3 is just not made to be replace your PC.
