With the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii in their prime, many gamers like to look forward into the future and guess what gaming console will be next. Well 1 user at N4G.com predicts the future by going into the past.
Now that we are almost to the historical halfway point of the current generation of consoles, Many gamers will wonder what's in store for the next generation. To get a better idea of what the future may hold, we can start by taking a look backward.
First came the "classic" era of consoles beginning in 1978. Phase one included the Atari 2600 and Intellivision. With the golden age of arcades in full bloom during this time, most games for these systems were ports of popular arcade games, or simple, pick-up-and-play type games. Most games were single screen, simplistic games that lacked any real depth. Phase two of this era brought us the ColecoVision and Atari 5200 systems. Most games for these systems were simply the same games with slightly updated graphics and sounds. Too many poor quality games eventually flooded the market, and the home video game market crashed in 1984.

Not saying hand controls would be totally phased out, but rather, more like the Wii, it would be a primary option (at least when it is first introduced), with the secondary option being a 'classic' controller plugin. As far as resolution goes, games (Sony and MS anyhow) would likely start with 1080P+ level, as there WILL be TVs that have higher resolutions than that relatively soon (though I'm sure they'll still support SDTVs for some time)....
Certainly would be a nice jump from what we have now.
Eventually we'll get into the whole full immersion experience with VR, though that would probably be 25+ years from now....
Just a theory on my part....
I think there is a rule of thumb that hardware gets two times more powerful every 12 months, so if the current PC hardware gets twice as powerful by middle 2009 and we still have i would say until 2011 for the next consoles, there is going to be a massive leap... Crysis is a massive leap for gaming and that came out half way into the PS3's first year, the PS3 couldn't run Crysis maxed out, so in 3 years from now gaming could get absolutely photo realistic, i am sure that is the next leap.
A Touch Virtual World thats what I think.
The Buttons are in the air visable... Look down a the floor... Its not a floor.... Its a warp! Press a button and you get sucked down..... Your on the other side of the univirse! Theres Pokemon!
Basically, the pictures are projected onto air somehow and of coarse, the floor and everything to, and detecters detect your movement and when you put your hand through a part of the screen, lasers may pick it up, and then do something else. And the projecter is soo powerful, you cannot see through the invisable wall....
It mabie next to the line of impossible to make, and take a few decades to make, using just a few billions of pounds, along with 6 billion more... *cough*
So who likes my idea? Thumbs up if you doo.....

I mean, sure graphics is a big part, but will it introduce anything new?
