PS3 DUALSHOCK 3 Impressions

The DualShock 3 – My impressions

Well I got my Play-Asia.com PS3 DualShock 3 controller today. Of course I tear into it and compare it to the Sixaxis. Amazingly there is no difference as far as you or I can see by simply looking at it other than the name “DUALSHOCK 3” printed on it. There is no USB cable shipped with it but for that matter I don’t think we get one with the new purchase of the Sixaxis either.

There is a very small weight difference, and I mean small. To me it still feels fragile like I can easily snap it in two. Not as fragile as the Sixaxis but fragile nonetheless. Think somewhere closer to the Sixaxis than the DUALSHOCK 2 to the weight and durable feel.

I then compared it to the Xbox 360’s wireless controller which also supports the rumble feature. The 360’s controller is heavier and feels more solid.

Well I started with Pain and the rumble was very nice although very light and not too noticeable. Next was High Velocity Bowling and the Sixaxis work very well and the rumble was more noticeable. The last game was Resistance: Fall of Man

There too the rumble was not very strong but a nice addition to the overall experience. I know many of you may not like the rumble feature but in my humble opinion, it is very nice to have it back! I'll play more games this weekend and comment afterwards.

Sounds pretty good. Supposedly, it feels great in MGS4, so I'm anxious to play as Snake again!

yeah. i liked it tonnes in resistance. as there are varying degrees of rumbles.

It's more sensative than the dual shock 2

Great to hear SS4Gogeta, thanks for updating us on it, comparing and contrasting the two PS3 controllers helped me decide to buy the DualShock 3 whenever it comes around here. Still a bit skeptical on how the SIXAXIS will flow with the rumble, but it seems pretty good.

My pleasure Storm. I don't use the SIXAXIS very much but this weekend I'll try it with Warhawk. I would try it with flOw but I don't think there's any rumble. Do you have a game in mind? Let me know and I'll rent it if I don't have it. I'll try it out and post the results.

I was thinking of Heavenly Sword, as last I heard, there was a patch update that made it compatible with the Dual Shock 3. The aftertouch with the rumble could have some effect, would like to know about how it runs with that game.

    Thanks again.

    What about battery life, SS4Gogeta?

It seems be just like the SIXAXIS. I played for a little over an hour and it had no affect on the battery life. I can't read the packaging info because its in Japanese. I'll keep you posted.

MGS4 is the only reason i will buy the DS3, i never cared for rumble i always turn it off and its annoying and it only was cool back in PSX era now its just annoying.

the only reason im buying one for MGS4 is beacuase Hideo Kojima is the only that uses the rumble in innovative ways.

Even a little Rumble's fine with me. When I first touched a PS3, the game (Warhawk) really did not feel the same, literally. I'm glad Sony is at least attempting to fix that. Anyone know if it'll be bundled with future PS3's or will it be always stand-alone?

It would be smarter for Sony to include the rumble controllers with any future product packs. I personally love rumble.

I have to say, I do kinda miss rumble. A while back (When I was WAY more biased than I am now) I didn't miss rumble much.

However, I just got back from a friend's house, where I played Call of Duty 4 on his 360, and I realized that it just felt so much better with Rumble!

I'm definitely picking up a Dualshock 3 as soon as they're out in the States.

I've always been a fan of the rumble. Especially when it comes to playing Horror games - having the rumble shake with the character's heartbeat, or having the rumble suddenly jump when a monster appears ... it frightens the crap outta me!
It really adds to the atmosphere of the game, imo.

    Fantastic review, SS4Gogeta.

Wait correct me if im wrong wasn't there news about this a month ago where it stated the PS3 dualshock was more solid and heavier to the six axis, including the triggers. I think it was the first news about DS in Japan and showed the compare and contrast about the two. So does that mean that article is wrong cause it sounds to me its no better than the current ones, despite the lack of rumble.

      quote Crimson Fury
The US version weighs in at 136.4 grams and the Japanese version weighs in at 191.8 grams for a difference of 55.4 grams.
Translates to 1.95 ounces. The plastic is a heavier quality, you can't see through like the six-axis when you hold it up to a light.

He's full of shit. That's his opinion and nothing official. Go to Play-Asia.com and place each item in your shopping cart. It will tell you what the shipping weight of each controller is.

Thanks for the input SS4Gogeta. I'm so glad that the Dualshock 3 controller will be as light as the Sixaxis. I will defintely get me a dualshock controller as soon as they are shipped to the U.S.

Anyone know if Unreal Tournament 3 already has dualshock support?

I am pretty sure most, if not all PS3 games will support the rumble feature. I think that was the point of the 1.94 firmware.

Rumble is great, it adds more to the atmosphere to gaming which explains my hate for Resistance but hoping to get my hands on one of these soon.

Thanks for the info SS4Gogeta, this was the ONLY reason I picked up a PS3 in Nov was in anticipation of the Rumble to return!! As soon as it hits the states, it will be in my hands!!! It might even be more important to me than GTAIV!!!!
