All Age Gaming's Danny Yee takes a look at the second 'co-op shooter' from Electronic Arts, Army of Two: The 40th Day. Is the second instalment pure co-op brilliance or does it fall short? Find out after the jump.

"Army of Two: The 40th Day is a testosterone-fueled cooperative shooter that improved on what the original set forth at doing – delivering an experience that is 99 percent aimed at males who enjoy drinking beer and playing cooperatively with their action-oriented buddies. What about the other 1 percent? Well … let’s say they must enjoy B-action movies, full of clichés, to gain any sense of gratification out of The 40th Day."

"Michael Lafferty of GameZone writes "Gamers don’t care. Doesn’t matter if it is sunny or cold outside – there is the warmth of the television screen or computer monitor, reveling in the glow of White Knight Chronicles, or Mass Effect 2. So what if winter is a bit longer. Six more weeks of winter is all the excuse needed. "You still gaming?" Don't scramble for a response - blame it on the groundhog.""

"After having reportedly shipped two million units to retail worldwide, Mass Effect 2 has taken the top spot in the UK, knocking Ubisoft’s Just Dance down to second place, according to GfK Chart-Track data. The chart applies for the week ending January 30th, which means BioWare’s latest managed to become the biggest selling game of last week with just it’s first days of sales."

"Every so often I hear people talk about how they miss the days when Japan ran the game industry. I don't think they so much miss the days when Japanese developers were on top of the world as much as they miss the days when Japanese developers/publishers actually worked in large to promote creativity rather than just follow trends. Those days have faded. While many great games still come out of Japan, thanks mostly to their always shrinking console market and a lack of knowledge on how to revi..."

"Developed by EA Montreal, Army of Two: The 40th Day is the follow-up to the 2008 hit. While the original was a testosterone filled shooter, this one goes in a different direction and sends the "Army of Two" back to basic training."

"-arms to swap stories and watch his back when the situation gets hot. True camaraderie is an illusion in most shooters. Whether playing with a friend on the second controller or with a squad of chattering A.I.s, the extra firepower is a privilege, not a prerequisite. Army of Two is different, because it is built wholly around cooperative gameplay. Shanghai is in ruins. In a matter of minutes, the gleaming metropolis of glass-lined towers and decadent neon has been reduced to a maze of ashen d..."

"The majority of the game follows Salem and Rios’ attempt to escape the city. While I can appreciate what the developers have attempted here, to recreate a somewhat realistic military situation based on lack of information and rapidly changing situation, the result is less than impressive. The open nature of the plot strips most of the purpose out of the combat, which means the combat feels somewhat dull."

"In 2008, Army of Two hit the scene and embodied everything that was co-op gameplay. Two badass mercenaries with attitudes to match, showed us what real teamwork is all about. Army of Two: The 40th Day has now arrived and the sequel is ready to up-the-ante of everything the first managed to achieve, but can this ‘bromance’ of epic proportions make an impact and kick off 2010 with a bang?"

I am not entirely sure what has been going on recently, but some game developers appear to be taking a page from professional wrestling.

While there has always been a number vocal devs that made crazy statements about their games (classic: John Romero's Daikatana "He will make you his '*itch'" ads) I don't remember a time when so many devs have been taking aim at one another's products.

The most recent industry in the industrial crossfire comes from the creative director of 'The 40th D...

"Electronic Arts Inc. announced today that it has signed a deal with IDW Publishing to expand two of its intellectual properties, Army of Two™ and Dragon Age™, into comics under a new EA Comics imprint with IDW beginning in January. EA and IDW will launch monthly, ongoing series for both Army of Two and Dragon Age. Each issue will be published in print and distributed nationally at comic book outlets, with digital versions released for iPhone and iPod Touch and other emerging digital platforms."

"We love a good box art. And we always appreciate a bad box art. But I'm not sure under which column the new Army of Two: The 40th Day cover falls, spooky, dramatic and explosion-filled though it may be.

At the very least, it's consistent with the original, with our heroes Rios and Salem once again back-to-back behind a column that reads Army of Two. But perhaps it's a little too close, intimidating stare of "you better buy this game or we'll shoot up another major metropolitan city, kid" a..."

Here are a few of the many notable events and products which you should get excited about - whether they happen or not is another question?"

"Electronic Arts has lifted the curtains on the debut trailer for upcoming shooter Army of Two 40th Day, which hit shops later this year for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360.

Seen below, the footage depicts a war-torn city interspersed with cryptic messages and solider types battling it out in the streets. There’s also a fair amount of environmental destruction going on, which is made more impressive by the fact everything is running in real-time. Enjoy."
