It's the first of the May updates for the Japanese Virtual Console, and its update sees a trio of shoot-em-ups reach the VC, along with a rare appearance by a Neo Geo game.

The first shoot-em-up is Axelay for the Super Famicom. Players gain their weapons as they advance further into the game. Largely considered one of the better shmups out there, Axelay is already available on the Virtual Console in North America.

One of the many things that Nintendo of Japan does right and Nintendo of America doesn't do right is that NoJ releases before the start of every month what games will release that month onto the Virtual Console. While this doesn't really match how awesome April was, the month of May is shaping up to be a pretty good release month... in Japan.

Alright, so this week doesn't have one of the greatest games of all time, but it's kinda hard to live up that release week of SMB and the VISUALSHOCK! SPEEDSHOCK! SOUNDSHOCK! that is the awesomeness of Alien Soldier.

What we get this week is Volleyball for the NES (500 Points), AXELAY for the SNES (800 Points), which seems to be pretty good, and Blue's Journey (NeoGeo, 900 Points), which Europe got last week.
