It looks like another MMORPG is tossing it's hat into the F2P crowd. City of Heroes is going to be renamed City of Heroes: Freedom, and will begin with the Issue 21 update...

"City of Heroes Freedom is on the way, and it promises more content, more rewards, and more choices for the players. NCsoft and Paragon studios have worked together to create an update that is catered specifically to letting the players choose what they want in a super hero MMO."

Perfect World, a leading online game developer and operator based in China, and Atari announced today that they have entered into an agreement where Perfect World would acquire 100% equity interest in Cryptic Studios, the California-based MMO game developer who started the development of City of Heroes & City of Villains, and have also put out the (recently) free-to-play Champions Online, and Star Trek Online.

"This booster pack will give players new options on how to customize their characters. Players can look more alien, more hellish, and more genetically altered than ever before. It's mentioned that two tails, wings, and a sword will be included in the pack. New emotes and powers were touched on but no specifics were given."

"Today is City of Heroes' six-year anniversary. To celebrate, the superhero and super villain MMO is releasing its 17th issue today. Issue 17: Dark Mirror is adding the optional upgrade called Ultra-mode, epic archetypes at level 20, animated tails, and much more."

"In the Going Rogue expansion, hero and villain characters will become immersed in the new parallel universe known as Praetoria, which is governed by Tyrant, the evil incarnation of the game’s main protagonist, Statesman. As gamers search for Tyrant and the rest of his Praetorian guard, implacable foes and fierce resistance will arise to face them from all sides, causing heroes and villains alike to question their loyalties."

A short but kind of sweet release list this time.

PC owners are treated to Demigod, a game which fuses too many genres to count and looks to be rather fantastic (we'll have a review up Tuesday on Neoseeker) and horror-ish title Cryostasis, one we've never heard of but could be great (it's been getting some favourable reviews and has a rather unique plot).

DS owners, meanwhile, are treated to two more Atlus-published RPGs: Dokapon Journey and The Dark Spire.

"The transaction encompasses all of Cryptic’s proprietary IP, tools, technology and work-in-progress and integrates all members of the leadership team and employees into Infogrames. This acquisition is a critical step in the implementation of ATARI’s strategy to become a leading online game developer and publisher..."

"In-game advertising is something that we have carefully considered ever since the initial release of City of Heroes in 2004. From our perspective it always came down to a few fundamental questions: Will this technology make our game experience more immersive or less immersive? In other words, is City of Heroes an appropriate environment for it? In-game advertising in other MMOs has sometimes been received as an unwelcome addition, so could we actually find ways to make this a significant win ..."
