Default Prime writer Kyree Leary turns the tables in this week's iteration of his column, The Catch-Up. Here are some possibly-missed games that he thinks you should make up for.
"Splosion Man developers Twisted Pixel have revealed their next game, and it’s for the Kinect. Those who’ve left their little camera collecting dust since launch finally have something to look forward to. The game is called Gunstringer, and here’s what Twisted Pixel has to say about it:"
"Critical Gamer writes: Mike Wilford is CEO of Twisted Pixel Games, the Austin, Texas-based independent developer responsible for cult hits like The Maw, ‘Splosion Man, and most recently Comic Jumper. After graduating from Penn State University in 2001, Wilford spent several years with High-Voltage Software before teaming up to found Twisted Pixel in 2006. Mike was kind enough to spend some time answering a few of our questions about Comic Jumper and what’s in store for Twisted Pixel next…"
Hmmm, not sure if it's the style of game for me, but those who love the Comic Jumper series should get a real kick out of the latest iteration appearing on XBLA.
Of course it's not all fun-n-games, and every game has its weak points, as this reviewer points out. Come check it out, and an excellent trailer that is just totally out-of-it, and a barrage of images.
"The story of Captain Smiley is based around his comic shutting down due to dwindling readership which forces our hero to guest star in other comic books across modern comics, Fantasy style, the 60s Silver Age and even Manga. He does this of course, unwillingly but am I glad he decided to do so. Comic Jumper is an absolutely hilariously written game with plenty of authentic comic book references across several genres and has Smiley riding unicorns."
"As Captain Smiley and Star jump from comic to comic in order to earn enough cash to fund their triumphant return, their fate rests in the hands of the gamers controlling them. Be warned: this game harkens back to the insanely difficult 8-bit era of Contra and other sidescrolling shooters."
"Aside from a few humorous early moments, Comic Jumper failed spectacularly to endear itself to me. The appalling attitudes towards women and the irritating gameplay undermined any potential the concept had. Even the basic premise of parodying comic books fell flat as Twisted Pixel resorted to stone-age attitudes towards the medium."
"If you are a 20-something gamer then you remember playing side-scrolling shooters such as Earthworm Jim and Gunstar Heroes. Comic Jumper: The Adventures of Captain Smiley will take you back to the awesome times of platforming shooters. With its excellent writing and balls-out sense of humor, this game not only is a great homage to old school games, but also tells a quirky tale that DESTROYS the fourth wall."
"While these games embody everything that is good about videogames, they have been MIA for the past decade. However, developers have thrown these games an extra life, and the old school is coming to the new via the PSN, XBLA, and even the Wii."
