"Horror is a genre I never really explored in video games, but with the recent announcement of Resident Evil 6, I decided it would be rude not to talk about it. Most of my experience up until recent years was the terror of corrupted data, the fear I might somehow die before I reached the next save point and the concern that maybe, just maybe, I’d spent money on the wrong game and would have to spend the next few weeks exploring a terrible glitch-ridden world that bored me to tears. However, I ..."
"The news shouldn't be surprising given that the company has already churned out a sequel to the original survival horror 3rd-person shooter, a prequel rail-shooter spin-off for the Wii (and PS3), a puzzle game, an awesome iOS and Android 3rd-person shooter, comics and a novel. However an EA insider claims that the company is basically just getting started with the franchise, and is looking at new ways to expand the Dead Space universe."
Halloween is here and Goozernation has a list of the top 10 scariest games to play. There are so many to choose from, Silent Hill 2, Dead Space, Alan Wake, Eternal Darkness, Condemned 1, Amnesia, as well as many others. Nothing like playing in a dark room with the surround sound cranked up.
"A brilliant and successful new IP can affect an entire generation of games and game players; I consider these to be the best new franchises of this current generation (2005-present)."
"It can be tough to game on a budget, but not to worry. We’ve got a collection of sales here that even the most dedicated penny pincher will find appealing. Here are the top five video game and accessories that you can find for under $10. Enjoy the knowledge of knowing what you may have to spend when looking over a video game sale."

A commercial radio station in Minnesota, Classical Minnesota Public Radio, has made a podcast of gaming music called Top Score. In the podcast the host will also talk with composers of video games as big as Call of Duty: Black Ops and Red Dead Redemption. So check it out.
In honor of the 4th of July EA is running a sale on some of their iOS and PC download games. There are over 50 iOS games on sale. Most of the iOS games are $0.99 and this includes titles like Dead Space and NBA Jam. For the PC download sale such titles as Mass Effect 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 are on sale
Everybody loves the zombie shooter genre. I say genre because there have been so many titles in the past few years that it can be considered its own genre. Check out the article as we discuss the best of the best.
"You won't find Link's Master Sword or Mario's fireballs here, folks. Instead, we've chosen to focus on those weapons that make players most eager to pull the trigger again and again."
"It’s rare gems like Dead Space on the iPhone 4 that really amaze and spark great interest in someone like myself.
When a title that is so graphically visceral on its console counter parts can offer almost the same level of detail and immersion on a mobile device, it’s pretty impressive.
Okay, so I lied: it doesn’t offer the ‘exact gaming experience’ as its console counterparts, but for a game on a mobile device that is mainly used to call, message and browse the internet, it certainly i..."
"When I say that piracy is not tackled positively this is because I do not count cramming every form of DRM (Digital Rights Management) known to man onto a disk to the extent that you must be connected to the moon's Wi-Fi hotspot to play and that the disk is registered to your tongue print. DRM is basically the methods of preventing games to be copied, ranging from a simple CD Key to some of the more extravagant methods. It can frustrate gamers, and more often than not the gamers that are bein..."
"Set to ship in March, collectible company Epic Weapons will be releasing not just one but two Plasma Cutter replicas from Dead Space. Based on Isaac’s weapons from the first two Dead Space games, the Plasma Cutter replicas are in 1:1 scale, which for those out there means that they’re the same size as they appear in the game and aren’t a measly scaled miniature. Opting to go for the 1:1 scale is certainly cool, but it means that the price will be higher as the Dead Space 1 Plasma Cutter ret..."
"Your mom may claim she loves you, but at the end of the day, she hates everything you like. What you wear, how you eat, who you date - it really doesn’t matter. Trying to please dear mummy is an exercise in futility. How to cope with it? Just enjoy life as you see fit. That means trying out new games, even (and especially, if you’re a typical adolescent) the ones she hates. Not sure what titles qualify? Well, some mothers have unique hatreds, but we feel the following list should keep you cov..."
It seems like we may have more information on the upcoming Dead Space movie than first reported. Check out the link to hear what the co-creator said of a Dead Space movie.
"Steam is currently selling the highly acclaimed horror shooter Dead Space for $6.80. That’s 66% off for the highly acclaimed predecessor to Dead Space 2, which will launch in just a few days on January 25. If you’re eagerly anticipating the launch of Dead Space 2 and for some reason missed the first game, or if you want to relive the adventure all over again, you should really take advantage of this weekend deal."
Almost every game has bad segments in them, even some of the greatest of all time. Associated Content takes a look at some of the greatest games of all time that have segments bad enough to make you question your overall experience with the game.
"The beauty lies in what is communicated to us from the game, and in how we respond to its resonance. They don't need to be complicated or elegant, but they must introduce characters and ideas that stir us, tied into a story that has something grander to say."
"Let's face it; Metal Gear Solid 4 was basically a film anyway. If ever an example is needed of a game that gives more time to cut scenes then it does to gaming, MGS4 is it. Did that make it a bad game? No. And that fact in itself proves that Metal Gear Solid could be the basis for a fantastic film."
"There was a great moment, 12 years ago, when the tension and the terror had finally taken its toll, and I was forced to put down the controller and walk away from what turned out to be the scariest game of the ‘90s: Silent Hill. This was the first – and only – time in my life in which a game was so scary, and made me so agitated, that I physically and emotionally needed to take a break. It was a huge accomplishment in game design, and I haven’t had that feeling since. Not while playing a game..."
This is not a "best scary games of all time" list, but rather a healthy selection of genre greats that ranges from psychological thrillers to jump-scare-marathons and undead blast factories.
"Lately we have seen a renaissance of gaming tie-ins. Tie-ins can include movies, comic books, novels, and even television series. Big publishers like wringing every cent they can from a popular IP, and thankfully this will often bring fans some extra material about the universes that we've fallen in love with. They aren't always done well, but I would argue that there is an increasing movement towards hiring quality writers and artists for these projects, and it has made for some fantastic ti..."
"As we reported yesterday, Sony is adding new games to the "Greatest Hits" collection. However, Sony has now confirmed that there are ten games getting added and not just the five that were showin in the Wal-Mart flyer. Expect to start seeing the fancy new red boxes and $29.99 prices at retailers in the next couple of weeks."
"Video games have much in common with movies when it comes to scare tactics. Both rely heavily on music and sound effects to create suspense and atmosphere. EA Redwood Shores' 2008 sci-fi horror gem Dead Space is a prime example, taking home awards for Audio of the Year and Sound Design of the Year at the seventh annual Game Audio Network Guild Awards. And, as anyone who's played the game can tell you, those awards are richly deserved. From the disturbing audio logs of the U.S.S. Ishimura's cr..."
"Tonight, television fans around the country tuned in for the season premier of LOST. If the producers are to be believed, it's the last season, and should give some closure to the plot lines started up over the past five years. While watching, I couldn't help but think about what makes the show so successful, and realized there are a few things that game makers could take away from J.J. Abrams' series. Well, besides Polar Bears, of course."
"When Electronic Arts announced Dead Space Extraction for the Wii—a follow-up to the million-plus selling PS3, 360, and PC title Dead Space—the company explained that the game would be used as a test case to see whether or not it would develop more Mature-rated Wii games in the future. And according to NPD sales figures, Extraction failed: it sold just 9,200 copies in its first week. So what does this mean for the future of Mature Wii games?"
"Some people blame the economy for a game’s poor sales but with the gaming industry gaining ground even in the face of the sunken economy there has to be other reasons for it. Some people blame market saturation saying there are too many desirable games to compete for the available time and cash gamers are willing to surrender. Still others think that a game’s sales have everything to do with competing titles released on or around the same date. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that some gam..."
"Almost ever piece of media, if it sells well enough, will warrant a sequel in some way, shape or form despite the very real underlying need for consistently new content. When Halo was originally designed, it was created as an RTS, for the Macintosh. Well, jump ahead a decade later and Halo has become a monstrous franchise that has brought gamers the world over to their knees and the RTS elements it was build on have gone into Halo Wars. But, when a publisher or developer decides that it is be..."
The supposed first teaser image for Dead Space 2 has been released by EA. It leaves quite a bit open to interpretation but seems like an indication that we'll hear more about this game soon.
Celebrating the 360's fourth anniversary IGN takes a look at the top 25 games on the console including some new and old releases over the years. The list is comprised of a wide variety of genres and features XBLA games for those looking for something on a budget. 360 owners can see what they've missed out on and put on their list for the holiday season.
It was recently announced that EA layed off 1,500 workers. They said that they will now be focusing on IP's that guarantee a profit. Such games Battlefield, Madden and Need For Speed. But what about all the new IP's that EA has created in the last few years. Such games as Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Spore and Brutal Legends might never see sequels. Which is a such a shame as EA renewed themselves with these amazing games, that sold only decently.
"A report by international news organisation Reuters has confirmed a 2010 release date for the highly anticipated sequel to 2008’s Dead Space on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game is reported to be in development at Visceral Games, an Electronic Arts studio, alongside Dante’s Inferno, also due for release next year."
"Gamers love their weapons. No matter if the game is a shooter, an RPG, or even a racing game for every player (and every character) there’s a favorite weapon. From shotguns and chainsaws to turtle shells and Light Sabers, the weapons we use in games have become almost as iconic as the games themselves. Let us take a look at some of the best and baddest weapons around in this top ten round up."
"Silent Hill 3
In a tight bind, when our bowels simply can’t hold out any longer, the standards for where we’ll rest our rear-ends drop sharply. But even if we had industrial strength diarrhoea, the one thing we’d always insist on is an adequate amount of light so we can see where we’re depositing our business. Sadly, Silent Hill’s dingy and disgusting John can’t quite keep up with these rigorous standards.

"How can a video game be scary? Unlike horror movies where you're stuck watching some hapless victim succumb to scary stuff, video games empower players to fight back. Or at least run away. It's October. Time to identify horror-gaming's essentials.
Some of the scariest experiences I've had in my life come from video games. I can remember running from the family computer room in tears after a wax skeleton in an Are You Afraid of the Dark game chased me through a basement.
My chest still g..."
"With Gamer on the horizon, we've decided to celebrate the moments when games and movies converge, creating scenes that'd look as good on cinema screens as they do on our battered portable tellies.
So, rest your joypad on one knee, rest your DVD remote on the other knee, and join in. How many have you played?"
After critical success on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, Dead Space headed off to the Wii. Extraction isn't a port to the Wii, but rather a prequel. At GamesCom Dead Space's producer hinted that after beating Extraction, players should wait until the end of the credits as it will hint to the "future of the series". Could this mean new info on Dead Space 2?

"Fifth EA games franchise looks set for the silver-screen treatment
EA’s solid work in successfully bringing new games IP Dead Space to the market last year tastes that bit sweeter for the US publisher today with news that the franchise is to be spun-off into a Hollywood movie.
Variety reports that D.J. Caruso has been drafted in to direct the sci-fi horror flick, with EA co-producing it with Temple Hill partner Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.
Temple Hill is also producing the currently..."
"Activision are building a new studio in San Francisco. But need people to work there. So to get the ball rolling, they've nicked two of the senior staff at EA's Visceral Games, the team behind Dead Space and Dante's Inferno.
Glen Schofield, who was general manager at Visceral, and Michael Condrey, who was chief operating officer, both let their colleagues at EA know today that they were off to work at the new studio, whose name and purpose is at the moment a mystery."
Though Visceral Games' lauded horror title Dead Space did well enough in the end with 1.5 million in sales, it didn't exactly reach Gears of War status, say. Turns out though numbers are actually about double that, with the studio's manager Glen Schofield estimating half of the people who played the game bought it used.
Oddly he cites only console figures -- what about PC sales?
Dead Space for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 is one of the best single-player games released in 2008. The horror video game almost included multiplayer, however, as Electronic Arts was planning to include a co-op mode until ultimately scrapping the feature.
"Then 2008 came, along with lots of new IPs. Do you think that it was the right strategy to launch that many new IPs so quickly, or, as you look back on it, would you have spread them out?
FG: I'm not the kind of guy who ever looks back. I look back long enough to learn a few things and then apply them going forward. I think in the spirit of your question, I think we launched too many new IPs all at once in Q3.
I would have spread them out and found better windows for them. I would hav..."
"Silent protagonists, or for those who haven’t been properly acquainted with the English language; quiet heroes, aren’t exactly a common product of modern video games. However some have become famous for the lack of verbal engagement, whereas some would argue that it doesn’t create an extra axis of mystery to the character, but only renders them as bland and unimportant. Here is a small list of 5 silent protagonists in modern gaming, and how their silence altered how the game was perceived on ..."
"Religion. In real life, it’s all kneeling, self-reflection and guilt. In games, it’s all alien conspiracies, demon worship and craftily put together cults designed to rob us of our readies. The following faiths might all be deceitful, money-grabbing or just downright homicidal, but at least they’re exciting. And hell, adopt a positive attitude, take everything they say at face value and follow their orders blindly, and we might even make it through one of their sermons with all our limbs. Hal..."
"Electronic Arts employee Patrik Patel has cheekily updated his LinkedIn profile - revealing he’s working as a Technical/Development Director for Dead Space 2. Call us “obvious” but we’d assume the project has to be rolling before work can begin.
Perhaps we’ll see something at E3. Although don’t hold your breath. It’s unlikely this game will see the light of day until next year."
"After Electronic Theatre reported on the fact (with thanks to Blend Games) back at the start of March, Electronic Arts Inc. today officially announced that its award-winning EA Redwood Shores Studio has been renamed and re-branded Visceral Games to better reflect the studio’s culture, identity and focus on creating intense action-oriented intellectual properties."
It's a topic that has come up on various gaming sites recently... Many so-called "survival-horror" titles of this generation (such as Dead Space and Resident Evil 5) are taking more action-oriented routes to attract a larger audience, thus losing the "survival" aspect that many older horror games were known for.
But is survival horror slowly disappearing? Or is it simply evolving and adaptaing to suit a more mainstream audience? And if that's the case, is this change for the better?
Every now and then we need a helping hand in a game, so it's always nice knowing that there are characters who will point you in the right direction and send you on your merry way. Unfortunately, there are also the characters who go out of their way to help...and end up becoming annoying nags. Here are Gamesradar's Top 7 Game Characters That Need To Shut The *bleep* Up ...
"Survival Horror, the genre that had us mowing through crazies in the early Alone in the Dark games, boxing with mutant bears in Ecstatica, and blowing zombies away in Resident Evil just had EA Redwood Shores crown it a new king.
If I were Yoda I'd say, "For more talk no need there is," and then proceed to force slap you silly until you play this game. And then I'd do a double somersault just to show you how much I mean business."
The prequel to Redwood Shores' Dead Space is seeing some details pour in.
First, it's said to take place three weeks before the original's protagonist Isaac gets to the Ishimura, the ship we traversed last time. You start out on a planet before setting off, but things "turn nasty".
Next, you'll be able to play as two different characters, and one NPC is a heroine you must protect and save (not much of a heroine).
The flamethrower will be in the game, as well as a couple of different...
"Yesterday afternoon news broke that Electronic Arts had filed a trademark for the name Visceral Games. While there may be a number of reasons for such a move the opening of a brand new studio or development of a new line of products, for example Blend Games have drawn a connection with a report in Variety from back in September 2008, in which EA Redwood Shores Glen Schofield stated that they were Looking to brand the studio. Thats what Im doing right now. Its going through legal."
"dsH: Recently, Dead Space Extraction for Wii has been announced. Do you plan to integrate any new features? Will map sizes and number of enemies have to be reduced compared to Dead Space? Will it still be physics heavy?
Glen: You should see it. It looks fantastic on the Wii. In my opinion (and others) its one of the best looking games so far on the Wii. Obviously we will make a couple compromises but in other ways we can add more, especially taking advantage of the Wii controllers. There..."
Electronic Theatre offers details of the forthcoming Wii exclusive Dead Space Extraction, prequel to 2008's Dead Space, including the very first official trailer released today.
"All alone on V-Day? Emotionally in the dumps? Just want to commiserate with the best of them?
Because we know how you feel, we've scraped up the loneliest games to help you sulk away the year's loneliest weekend without playing with your joystick too much. May these titles further freeze the icy blankets on your Twin-size bed."
Since the Resident Evil 5 demo's release, fans have been split down the middle regarding the game's controls. Some think they're outdated and clunky, while others think there is nothing wrong with them. MTV Multiplayer's Patrick Klepek is in the former group. He believes Capcom have made an error in choosing not to update the controls of their newest game. He uses Dead Space as an example of what next-gen horror games should play like. Do you agree? Disagree?

"Well, the announcement already has caused quite the ruckus in the short time since its been issued and both sides of this fence are crowded. On one side, people are welcoming the game and the possibility of more to come from EA yet the other believes that allowing another port could damage the Wiis legacy."
"During a conference call today, EA CFO Eric Brown noted that both EA Redwood Shores' Dead Space and DICE's Mirror's Edge sold over one million copies each in 2008.
The figure includes all versions of the games that were released in 2008. The action-horror shooter Dead Space was available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, while the first-person parkour game Mirror's Edge hit PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008."
"EA just confirmed a Wii version of Dead Space in its Q3 investor call.
The firm said it is to focus on stronger marketing for Wii in the coming year, with Dead Space, new tennis titles, three MySims games and Hasbro brands
Were a little unclear on release date for the new version of 2008s celebrated horror, but this year is a safe bet. Mr EAs calls a little flaky in the quality department.
The news comes on the back of confirmation of a heavy Q3 loss for the developer."
"Kung Fu Panda Had The Best Video Game Animation Of 2008. Conversation Over.
Kung Fu Panda? Says who? Says the International Animated Film Society, that's who. The video game based on Dreamworks Animation's movie of the same name just scored an Annie, beating out Dead Space and Wall·E."
"The gaming community has a morbid fascination with death, and something is always dying. Apparently E3 is dead, PC gaming is dead, and some say the survival horror genre is dying. Most gamers readily admit that Resident Evil 4 is a great game, but no one is trying to defend it as a survival horror title. Indeed, the Resident Evil franchise has changed over the years, and we're a long way from where Capcom started."
We certainly got excited when an article was submitted concerning a Master Sword becoming a reality. Thanks to Sub-Zero of unrealitymag.com, you can check out eleven others as well in his gallery! (Including a Master Sword as a twelfth)

"In years past, NeoGAF has done their favorite moments in gaming, using only MS Paint to show you. Looking back at 2008 brings us some of the coolest moments, great memories that can look amusing to just plain epic, even when in Paint. I purposely left out the names of the games as half the fun is guessing (but if you cant figure it out, right click and hit properties to see the file name where I put the game)."
Patrick Klepek of multiplayerblog.mtv.com blogs about his unfortunate tale. He packed himself ready these Christmas holidays, he was ready to spend two weeks destroying his wrists, but he ended up doing absolutely no gaming at all! With this he poses the question, is he the only one?
"If you want to learn more about the storyline of survival horror game Dead Space but are too cheap to buy the tie-in comic books, you're in luck: the first issue is now available at Newsarama for free.
The comic book series, six issues in total serves as a prequel to the game. The colonists of Aegis VII unearth a mysterious alien artifact and things go downhill from there. It was illustrated by Ben Templesmith and written by Antony Johnston (who also scripted the game itself)."
"So here we are, on the 3rd January 2009, the tenth day of Christmas. Yes, Christmas seems like a long time ago now, but that doesnt mean there arent still plenty of bargains to be had in those January sales and thats exactly what The Twelve Games of Christmas is here for! A feature series running every day of the twelve days of Christmas, in The Twelve Games of Christmas Electronic Theatre runs through the greatest achievers in the videogaming year of 2008, month-by-month. "Every enemy is placed in a perfect spot to terrify the players, and the sound effects and eerie music just add to the spine tingling atmosphere. Every corner you turn will have you on the edge, and the sense of despair will kick in when faced by hordes of Necromorphs too. Along with Mirrors Edge, EA have established Dead Space perfectly, hinting at a most probable sequel, which I am sure will go down well."
So you probably have done all that can be done in Dead Space. You have beaten on impossible and have unlocked all trophies/achievements and you probably think you know all about Dead Space's religion, unitology. Well think again. CVG have done some investigation and dug deeper into the world of Dead Space. Unlocking secrets that were never told in the games cutscenes.
Well now this is good news. EA recently announced that they will be releasing their games on Steam. Well, now it has been revealed that the DRM protection of SecuROM that EA uses on some of their popular titles will be dropped for users that purchase the games on Steam.
"Despite the holiday season traditionally being a good time to release and establish new intellectual properties, both Mirror's Edge and Dead Space performed poorly. Marketing certainly wasn't an issue, nor were the reviews, as they both received good to decent remarks. Instead, the failure of both games is likely due to the current recession."
OXCGN writer looks at the dismal sales of New IP and how some blame it on the recession, when in fact, game sales figures show an 18% increase of late. Most of the problem is the overabundance of games in such a short window of time. Making it almost impossible for New IP's to have a chance of establishing a following.
Check the article out and most definitely let OXCGN know your thoughts on the matter. Games need to be staggered over the year rather than pushed out all in one short period...
"We look at the top 12 games from several platforms in order to determine which are the Top 12 Overall Games for 2008, and you might just be surprised at the overall winner for 2008 - coming from an Xbox site. OXCGN (aka XboxOZ360-gamer) has always maintained that the staff are gamers - not fanbois. Most have more than 2 consoles and platforms to play games on and simply enjoy gaming period.
So what better way to round off the year than to take a look at what we believe to be the top ..."
"An abducted soul, a lifetime of sins, a journey to the depths of despair. "You've read about some of our favorite games of the year. Now it's time for the disappointments.
The games below, chosen by the usual panel of Wired.com contributors, is in no way supposed to be a list of the worst games of 2008. Those are all for the Wii, cost $10, are about dogs and/or babies, and we wouldn't be caught dead playing them. No, these are the games that let us down the most this year. Most of them are actually good games. But they failed to live up to the hype, or didn't del..."
Jim Sterling of destructoid.com types about how the evolution of survival horror games has run them into the ground. This isn't the only speculation of recent times about the genre, with What happened to survival horror? and Survival Horror - Does it even exist anymore?. This blog is just one more look into how the genre is dying off.

The top seven life bars of all time is a bit of a quirky list, but a cool one! It contains such things as a pulsing heart and brain, spinal fluid and a face which gets bloodier by the second. In fact, one is even measured with a female's chest.
The Legend of Zelda Series took out first place with their class style of a series of hearts due to lasting a long time and one of the best remembered. This was followed by the loved classic Doom in second and somehow the Guitar Hero series in third.
"The plot maintains a well drawn pace for the first two thirds of the title, stumbling towards a conclusion that is as hair-brained as that of its Science-Fiction inspiration, Event Horizon. But to say that its unexpected it to misinterpret..."
"Winner of over 27 critic awards and currently nominated for Best Action Adventure Game on Spike TVs upcoming 2008 Video Game Awards on December 14th, gamers can experience a taste of, as GamePro magazine says, "...one of the best survival horror experiences ever created." Now, before experimenting on a turkey this Thanksgiving, you can tear the Necromorphs apart limb by limb with four different futuristic mining tools, and Isaac Clarkes telekinesis and stasis abilities."
While religion play's a big important role in the game, so does money in a small subtle amounts. One could argue the USG ishimura destroyed itself through religious fanatics, which is strue, but money also played a role in those fanatics lives. An interesting blog about why money is the root of all evil in dead space.

"Electronic Arts announced today that the critically acclaimed Dead Space will be releasing premium upgrade packs to provide the game hero, Isaac Clarke, an everyday systems engineer, with the ultimate Necromorph-dismembering equipment in his fight for survival aboard the space-travelling USG Ishimura. Players can experience the glory of strategic dismemberment November 13th on XboxLIVE! Marketplace worldwide and..."
"Dead Space and Uncharted only have one thing in common: they both are set in the third-person. When playing both games, players watch as every event unfolds for the hero of the adventure, but each tackles the revelatory nature of these events in entirely different manners. Where Nathan Drake, Uncharteds protagonist, is shuttled into a cut scene every time a major shift in the plot comes along, Isaac Clark (Dead Spaces player-character) remains in the players adept--or in my case, not so ad..."
"The most notable characteristic of Dead Space protagonist Isaac Clarke, besides the glow-in-the-dark welding suit he wears, is his silence. He doesn't speak at all throughout the entire game (unless you count pained grunts as speech). Isaac wasn't always this way, though..."
Yahtzee delivers a powerful review of the ball to the wall piss your pants scary Dead Space. (no- seriously, it is legitimately piss your pants scary - ask tekmosis about his first encounter with the... well never mind that), but be prepared to laugh, cry, and if you do ultimately pickup the game - piss your pants.
"When it comes to horror in games, there are a few things that are givens: it will likely be twisted, bloody, and terrifying. In other words, my kind of game. The genres of such games arent quite as predictable, however, ranging anywhere from RPGs to first-person shooters, and rightfully so; why limit a fun thing like terror to just one genre? Nevertheless, when looking at the overlying themes of these diverse games, trends have been emerging, giving everyone a glimpse of where things are pos..."
Is the survival-horror genre dying? It's a topic that has recently come up on gaming sites, with many recent survival-horrors (such as Dead Space and Silent Hill: Homecoming) taking a more action oriented route to attract a larger audience, thus losing the "survival" aspect that many older horror games had.
While horror games may be gaining in popularity, is survival horror slowly disappearing?
"So which one takes your vote for being more fear-inducing? Which one puts the money where the scares are? Which game, do you think, is more likely to send your next pair of pants to the hamper, and not because theyre dirty?"
Survival-Horror, you either love it or hate it. Whether Nemesis is chasing you down Resident Evil 3's cramped hallways, or Pyramid Head is cornering you in Silent Hill 2's dark rooms, or Sae is stalking you relentlessly in Fatal Frame 2, it's a genre that is bound to get your adrenaline rushing and your heart pumping, so much so that you might find yourself feeling dread and wanting to turn the console off. But that's why we play them, after all. We want to be scared.
Joystiq takes a look ...
"This game is, in short, very well put together. Slick production on every level, music, sound, voice acting, lighting, everything. I don't think this game is a "Horror" game, though. I would say it falls more to the "Thriller" catagory. Sure there are several moments that you will jump at. You'll maybe even yelp like a little girl that just had a frog shoved in her face like an old 1930's sitcom. More so than that, though, is the overall sense of dread that you get as you turn every corner wi..."
Dead Space has quietly slipped in under the radar and surprised many. Touted as being significantly better than any Resident Evil game in the past, or present, Better than Doom III, and yet it managed to also slip under the radar of the OLFC in Australia with a MA15+ rating - what were they thinking!?
Slip over and check out the review and the several videos and high rez pics on offer, you'll not be disappointed.
EA have become famous for making sports games, licensed games and rehashed sequels after sequels. Well EA knows that, and they plan on doing something about it. They are trying to change their image by bringing out new IP's such as Dead Space, Mirror's Edge and Spore. This is quite a good business strategy, but you have a long time to get to your goal EA.
The top list of games sold this week has been released.
Wii- Wii Music, Wii Fit, and Wii Play all came out on the top of the Wii lists.
Xbox 360- Fable II (not surprisingly), Tales of Vesparia, and Far Cry 2 were at the top of the charts.
Playstation 3- In North America Dead Space came out on top, with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed as second. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (special edition), and FIFA 09 came out on top in other regions.

Over at the Cinema Make-up School in LA, the web series titled 'Monster Makeover' lets you watch some talented artists turn people into horrible creatures that are found in video games. In the first video, they are using Left 4 Dead.
After each episode is put up, everyone has a chance to enter the 'Spine-Tingling' Sweepstakes, which gives you a prize package that includes an Elite version of the 360.
Looks like Microsoft is just in time for Halloween.
According to Variety, EA is planning on producing sequels to recent hits Army of Two and Battlefield: Bad Company. This news comes from EA boss, Frank Gibeau, who loosely confirmed EAs plans for some new franchise iterations in an interview with Variety.
We have seen many reviews for Dead Space, and most hail it as one of, if not THE scariest game ever. But why?
Popular Mechanics goes through 4 of the main reasons. Ranging from the Lighting and Shadows, Enemy Paths and AI, Real-Time actions, to the general chilling fearful atmosphere - Dead Space has all of the makings of a good typical survival-horror game, but it goes far beyond that.

"Players control Isaac Clarke, an engineer investigating a giant, seemingly abandoned spaceship. Naturally, Isaac and his team aren't alone on the ship - the crew has been turned into zombies bloodthirsty creatures known as Necromorphs. Isaac is then separated from his team and must fight off these Necromorphs while trying to find a way off the ship."
Whity has made another review today, and its on the brand new Dead Space. Whity expresses that this game stands out in the horror genre, and while not without its faluts, is definatly a worthwhile purchase.(or at least a rental) Hopefully this game wont go under the radar for most gamers.
Final Score: 8.9
(Disclaimer: Video contains cursing and gorish scenes from the game)

"I had a chance to travel to San Francisco to meet the team behind the game and explore the process that went into creating Dead Space, so I know that nothing about the game was effortless. This was one of EA's most focus-tested games, and the team described multiple times that developers butted heads with gamers over ease of use vs. the ability to go for the scares. The time they put in paid off, and luckily the team seems to have had almost complete freedom to chase its vision.
This is a ..."
"Fighting off the feeling that I had become a shut-in, I turned the lights off and started up Dead Space. So far so good, the intro UI is not scary. It is creepy but I am handling it. The score is eerie from the get go - brilliantly composed. So, into the introductory scene I go. It starts off with wonder and good excitement. After all, you are experiencing the majesty of space and mankind's achievements therein. Then, it all goes wrong, and from that point forward you are in for one hell of a..."
Ian Milham, the Art Director for the third person game titled Dead Space, talks all about the way the art and gore came to life in the game, one of them noting that it's how the whole team would envision the future.
Hey all, I have a real treat from you. We received a cool replica helmet from EA for the upcoming release of Dead Space and, since a bloody battle was fought who would get it in the office, a decision was made to give it away. You are helping us out by entering, seriously... Knives were drawn as editors and channel managers like myself argued who would get to take it home. Save us from ourselves!
Here is GCHD's review of Dead Space. So this game is getting some pretty awesome reviews. They even went as far as to say it's one of this generation's best titles.
"You’ll be getting an Obsidian Rig which will be available from the Playstation store once you log in the game. The main character will get a suit that has Playstation 3 themed colours (Black, red, blue and a little bit of yellow), increased toughness and more inventory slots.
You can get this item for free from October 24 till November 7. After that you will have to pay. How much is not known yet.
There also seems to be a limited edition red-tinged Scorpion Rig which you can get a select..."
Another brand new review for Dead Space. This one is from PSW magazine. And not to much suprise, they praise the game and love. But what is a suprise is that the say its the "Worlds scariest game" and that it "topples the Resident Evil series from its survival horror throne". Is this game that good? The score sure says it is.
Final Score=9/10
The issue with the full review hits stores tomorrow.
"Adrian: Being able to play with gravity looks like a dream come true for creative level design. Is there a PC level editor on the way that will let users unleash their creativity? Well, creativity and wretched hordes of monsters of course!
Chuck: We dont have a PC level editor on deck at this time, but thats a great idea. Our level designers had an absolute blast designing the zero-G areas of levels. It also represented a significant challenge, though, as they had to design rooms where ..."
"As we’ve seen in terrible American remakes of Japanese horror film classics (The Grudge, anyone?), it’s obvious that filmmakers always want to use music and sound effects to their advantage when attempting to scare the pants off its audience. However, after such banal usage in 99% of the horror films released throughout the years, it tends to become familiar. When the music swells in a horrifying tidal wave of strings and accompanying instrument, we’re all ready to jump in our seats, expectin..."
"The first verdict for EA's impressive survival horror game is in - and the score should keep fans excited.
The latest Xbox World 360 mag, on shelves today, awards the survival horror game 91%, claiming that Resident Evil developer Capcom should take note, "Because EA can teach them a thing or three about survival horror."
Exploring the decks of the Ishimura is a "nail-biting experience," says the mag, driven forward by the "film-worthy" script and "inspired" setting. "It's Rapture in sp..."
In a letter about reviewing Dead Space, at the top and in the largest text were the words "FEATURING STRATEGIC DISMEMBERMENT". Basically, that means throughout the game, you'll be cutting off monsters like it's nobody's business and it looks like EA - the developer and publisher of the game - wouldn't want to have it any other way.
October 21st in the USA, and October 24th in the UK will see more AAA titles released than any other time of the year. Mark your calendars, save your money, as we show you some of the games coming out on what promises to be the most exciting day of 2008.
"Dissecting Dead Space's Grotesque Visuals with Art Director Ian Milham.
For the Necromorphs, we went straight to human anatomy and trauma for reference. We have reference image folders that half the team doesnt have the stomach to look in.
Resident Evil shaped the world of survival/horror, and Resident Evil 4 later redefined it. Silent Hill interjected its own brand of creepy, while Fatal Frame showed us that anything can be scary -- even photography. But what these and most other su..."
Dead Space is shaping up to be quite a game. And now with the opening cinematic now live we can see just how the hero Isaac and his crew found their way on board the dead mining facility which constitutes the games levels.
There will be 41 trophies in total here's the breakdown by type:
Be warned that a couple of them may contain spoilers!
The UGO Games blog got a chance to look over Dead Space for a little while and have given us some information about the scary aliens called the Necromorphs and more!
After hearing about a problem with a mining ship, your character (Isaac Clarke), goes to check it out. While trying to fix it, he quickly realizes that it has been overrun by terrible monsters!
After somehow surviving his first encounter with a Necromorph, Clarke finds a gun named the Plasma Cutter. Obviously, instead of fi...
Some new Dead Space gameplay footage has been released today, showing the Plasma Cutter slicing through the sickest and creepiest creatures you will ever encounter!
Dead Space is a third-person shooter. You are a man named Isaac Clarke who works for the Concordance Extraction Corporation, and have received a call about one of the mining ships breaking down. You go to check it out, only to see that it has been taken over by aliens! Can you make it out of there alive?
Look out for the gam...
It was announced a while ago that Dead Space was banned from China, Japan and Germany. Then rumors started flying everywhere that something was fishy about this ban. EA has responded and they have confirmed that this is true, the game was banned in all three of those countries. Which begs the question, how bad can this game be to get banned from Japan?
Yesterday, there was a report that Dead Space would be banned in Germany, Japan, and China (link). Game Politics doesn't believe that there is a ban in those countries, for a number of convincing reasons (i.e. EA didn't say anything about it, EA might not even distribute games to China out of piracy concerns, etc).
Dead Space may be releasing even earlier than expected this month but not everyone will be able to enjoy it. It has just been announced that Dead Space will not be coming to China, Germany and Japan on any platform. It has not even been refused classification just outright banned. While China and Germany have been known to ban titles before, Japan comes as a significant surprise. No reasons as to why yet.
Originally set for a Halloween release date, it was pushed up a week early. Set for and October 24th release date. Well some more good news has come, and it has been pushed up another week for NA. It will release on October 14th. If they keep this up, the game will release before October.
GameInformer, the popular magazine about all things gaming that has somewhere near three million subscribers, always has a different game on the cover each time. MTV wanted to see if there was a GI cover curse, so they looked back into the past and pulled out magazines from 2-3 years ago.
One game titled Superman Returns didn't so well, receiving 6/10's. That's nothing compared to Fear and Respect, which was at one point on a GI cover, but ended up being canceled!
All in all, the game...
"Electronic Arts today announced that its new sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space will now be coming to stores on October 24th for the PLAYSTATION 3 and the Xbox 360. The PC version’s date will remain October 31.
The decision to bring it to fans earlier was due to completing the game early after months of polishing.
I guess Halloween isn’t that appealing anymore...personally, the earlier we play it, the better!"
Planet Xbox 360 was recently able to go EA Studios, located in Redwood Shores, California to check out Dead Space, a survival-horror game. While there, they were also able to interview Glen Schofield, the executive producer of the game. To see the interview, hit the source.
Planet Xbox 360 likes how Dead Space is coming along and is even calling it "one of the 'must own' games of 2008." Look for Dead Space on shelves October 20th!
Stephen Totilo found his Dead Space notes and one important thing he wrote down was about the TV's Dead Space devs are using to test their game out on. A Dead Space developer told him that he is testing Dead Space out on various TVs, one of them being a 4:3 standard set. Very good for anyone who has a standard TV, you won't see any small text or other screwy things.
Survival horror genre followers in need of more thrills and chills are probably itching to know what's been up with the development of Dead Space.
Well, according to Beaver the game is coming along very nicely. The game has reached the halfway mark of development, and the majority of motion capture and performance capture has been completed, giving the graphics end some much-needed headway.
They have also been working hard on temp-voice recordings that will be used in the game. They nee...
"Dead Space (Oct 31, 360/PS3/PC)
Dead Space feels eerily similar to Aliens, but the introductory trailer and our first hands-on demonstrated a level of suspense, mood, and intensity we haven't seen in a while. The premise: the entire crew of a deep space mining ship has gone missing, and it's up to you, the sole survivor, to rid the vessel of alien baddies. It should be noted that EA's survival horror only marginally beat out Left 4 Dead (360/PC), the fast-paced Zombie Killer by Valve with ..."
"Dead Space has been given an October 31st release date for both Europe and North America.
....
My biggest question is, will you be able to pause your game when trick and treaters come to the door?"
"You know how when youre really scared, like seeing what you thought was just a mannequin leave its post in Condemned, or wondering why you cant back up in BioShock only to turn around and see a splicer blocking your path? And you either pause the game to take a breather and gather your bearings, or you beat the hell out of them in a frenzy of fear with your 2×4/wrench and then pause the game to gather your bearings? Well, in EAs upcoming Dead Space, this technique to ease the tension and g..."
"No need to be very afraid with this one - at least, not as far as the games quality is concerned. Two of our correspondents have sat down for extensive run-throughs of Dead Space; both have come back from EA HQ with good words tumbling from their slack-jawed mouths. Its hard to believe that no one has thought to mine the haunted house in space theme for a videogame project before this, given that theres an entire bloated genre of this stuff in cinema.
That merely means EA has more to ..."
