The latest screenshots for the Level-5-developed and Square Enix-published upcoming Nintendo DS RPG Dragon Quest IX depict the complexity of the character customization for the protagonist. Players will be able to pick their character's gender and there will be five different build types, ten types of hairstyles, and ten types of faces to choose from. The latest addition to the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest IX was still not playable in this years TGS, however Square Enix did manage to reveal tidbits of screenshots for the game, with promises of a trailer and a presentation to be released over the next two days. Be sure to take a look at the screenshots below.

Some new Japanese Shonen Jump magazine scans for the first DS entry in the Dragon Quest series. Battles seemed to have shifted back to a menu-based system compared to the real-time hack and slash we first saw last year, though you can still see foes on the field before engaging. This is a nifty compromise for those who felt the real time battles would shake too many roots. Player characters also appear customizable right down to their facial expressions.
