After a spat of DRM drama for a legitimate owner of Batman Arkham Asylum (namely, me), I felt a rant about the pitfalls of DRM done wrong was necessary. There are companies that do it well, and companies that don't. I explore examples of both in this rant.
The gaming landscape can be a serious place. Some developers, in attempt to make art, stray away from making their games humorous and fun. Here for you is a list of the funniest games we've ever had the chance to play. Let us know how we did and what games you would add if you could. Cheers!
The Mother series is known for its cast of crazy enemies that range from hippies to old ladies to possessed paintings. Earthbound featured what can only be considered the weirdest collection of foes in the entire series. What enemies from the second game in the Mother series should Mother 4 bring back?
The fan-made game Mother 4 may have a long way to go, but we can still speculate and formulate ideas about it. What gameplay features would you like to see in Mother 4? Pop culture references? Maybe bring back some old enemies? BrightHub discusses three features that should be implemented into Mother 4.
Fans of the cult classic SNES title Earthbound have been foaming at the mouth since hearing about Mother 4, a fan-made successor to Shigesato Itoi's series. What do we know about this fan-made endeavor thus far? And looking back on the Mother series as a whole, what can we expect from it?
"The next chapter of the Earthbound series has merely been a pipe dream for most people, but Chaisu and his crew of programmers at Azure Studios have taken up the cause. As an unofficial sequel to the series, Mother 4 follows the adventures of Chase when something strange goes on in his town. Sound familiar?"
"One of these was the Mother series, simply known as "Earthbound" in its non-Japanese release. This eccentric, adorable and engrossing game, while a commercial failure in its time and unable to spawn a modern successor (at least in the US market), still has much to teach us."
Cult video games are as impactful to gaming as cult movies are to film. These titles stand in a category of their own and have their own loyal following. These are the top 5 video games to garner a cult following.
What do controller rumble and Earthbound have in common? They're both missing from the Virtual Console. This is a list detailing games and features that are sadly missing from Nintendo's retro download service on the Wii.
"A brilliant little JRPG. It sends up the RPG genre and is utterly riddled with pop-culture references as well as being a well designed and thoroughly absorbing adventure in its own right."
Mike Gingras is feeling a little nostalgic, unlike others of recent. At any rate, he's interested in a question and some answers. How necessary is gaming history knowledge in order to call yourself a true gamer? Check out the source for his thoughts.
"I thought I'd share another list: the top 5 tearjerker RPGs. Here they are according to Oricon:
1. Final Fantasy X
2. Dragon Quest V
3. Final Fantasy VII
4. CLANNAD
5. Mother 2 (EarthBound)"
"Welcome to Gems of Gaming. This new column will cover games that I personally consider classic. The goal is to analyze these games objectively and look at what sort of impact they had on gaming once they were released. So without further ado, let’s get into it shall we?
I’m assuming here, and yes, I know assumption wins and loses wars, but let me finish…I’m assuming we all have a game that we remember from when we were growing up, a game that means something sentimental to us. That we spen..."
This is a must download of The Bender this week. We preview EVERYTHING that will happen and E3 (and even things that might not happen). "I love boss fights in video games. Everyone looks forward to them, and they usually provide some of the funnest/hardest/most memorable bits of any game. They also usually have the best music, best cutscenes, and in general, they're a blast to play. But what makes a perfect boss battle?
Well as I said, great music helps a lot, and there has to be a perfect balance in the atmosphere. You have to be enjoying the fight, but at the same time be scared out of your wits that you could die at any ..."
Here's a cuter top list for all the softer gamers out there. Bob Mackey of www.1up.com has put up a list of the top ten dogs of the gaming world!
"Early in the summer of 2007 Starmen.Net received an unsolicited message:
"EB on VC in July."
There wasn't much else to the message. We were skeptical at first -- EarthBound fans have endured more ill-fated rumors, delays, false starts, cancellations and disappointments than probably any other fanbase in gaming history, so we approach everything with a healthy skepticism. Like, 0% body fat skepticism."
"So we walked from canceled event to canceled event all three days of the VGXPO. Finally however, something actually happened, The Cosplay Competition. There was some crap (isn't there always?), but we also saw some amazing costumes. Steve Kurtz from Cruisin' 92.1 FM MC'ed the event, and the judges were wrestler and geek Eric "The Smoke" Moran; Kevin, Joey, and Eric from the web series Fighters High; and comic book artist Ashley Woods. Pictures are being posted below and video of each person t..."

"We will be streaming a feed live on our website of us playing Mother 1,2,&3 from August 28 at 4pm till August 30 at 11 pm (55 hours straight!). We will feature chat along with video to create an interactive event. Our main goal will be to encourage phone calls to Nintendo of America (NOA) requesting Earthbound to be brought to the U.s in some way shape or form."
CasualtyGamer goes through their list of the best 6 RPGs available for the SNES, which is arguably the best system for traditional RPGs. All in all- gamers who played the original, or even gamers who played the countless remakes will appreciate this list.
Cult favorite SNES RPG Earthbound is one of the games constantly clamored for by fans for release on the Virtual Console. Perhaps, they'll get their wish.
It was discovered today that Earthbound has been rated by the ESRB for the Wii, with an E rating.
The question is, now, will it be the next Super Mario RPG/Shining Force II, or will it be one of the 200+ games available on the Virtual Console and actually release?
Only time will tell.
In other news, another game rated by the ES...
"The Japanese role-playing game is a surprisingly important genre for developers to study - both in terms of gameplay and storytelling, and Gamasutra presents an 'Essential 20' explaining and chronicling the top JRPGs of all-time.
Valkyrie Profile: In most RPGs, it's your job to stop the end of the world. In Valkyrie Profile, it's your job to start it.
The battle system is a strange beast, with actions for each of the four party members assigned to a face button. Each character has a numbe..."
