"In this dark cloud known as the Global Economic Meltdown, it's hard to justify spending 60 bucks on a new video game.

But the best games for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii aren't necessarily those for sale in stores.

Some of the most inventive titles are downloadable games, small chunks of digital fun that cost only $5 to $15 apiece."

"Sources report that the mind-bending puzzler Echochrome will soon be getting trophy support. For those who haven't played it, Echochrome is a very innovative puzzle game based on optical illusions. The player guides an avatar around levels that look like something out of an M.C. Escher painting, trying to gather up "echoes" that have been placed around the map. In order to overcome obstacles such as gaps between platforms, the player can shift the perspective of the game to cover up holes or ..."

"This year it's all about bite-size, full-fat fun. Perfectly-formed games that don't trouble your wallet. Mini-delights. You might think Metal Gear Solid 4 or Grand Theft Auto IV will stand out as the pinnacles of gaming in 2008, but the real stars of these 12 months are the 12 games we've listed below. And not one of them should cost more than a console joypad.

RED LYNX TRIALS 2
On PC | Out Now

A great example of how being cheap doesn't cheapen a game, Red Lynx Trials 2 initially cost ..."

"Either you've already played the Japanese demo or you're about to play the American one, doesn't matter, Echocrome's teaser levels make things look easy. Pedestrian. As though the dev team came up with a neat concept, but couldn't think of ways to really push it. Yeah, no, that's WRONG. Look at these new screens. These later, harder levels are built for one purpose: to take your mental ass, wine it, dine it, then kick it."

It was claimed over a month ago that an Echochrome Demo was arriving next week to the Playstation Network Store though unfortunately never made it. Well today, Echochrome’s Associate Producer Kumi Yuasa has announced on the Official Playstation Blog that demos of the game will be available for download from tomorrow for both the Playstation 3 version as well as the Playstation Portable version.

Kumi Yuasa though also claims that with both version players will have the ability to create the...

"What is art? It’s a fairly straightforward question, yet it encompasses a limitless amount of correct answers. Art is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as the conscious use of skill and creative imagination, especially in the production of aesthetic objects. What happens then, when the physical aspect is removed?

The other day, I asked my friend’s father, one of the most level-headed people I know, if he considered film to be a form of art. I was hit with a rapid response confirming that ye..."

Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of marketing at Sony, and the guy in charge of the PSN has posted a blog post on the official US Playstation blog. In it, he discusses how this year will lead to massive expansions in terms of the PSN's service.

According to him, the three major goals for the year are to provide the best free online gaming possible, providing 'digital media download services', and providing 'original content'.

The two major things that he revealed though, are that a d...

"All games – even the daftest of pimp simulators or zombie mashers – stimulate cerebral activity, no matter what the Daily Mail would have its readers believe. And Echochrome is certainly not a game for Daily Mail readers: it’s way too clever for them. It’s a game for Guardian readers and, of course, SPOnG readers – that’s you!

So, this is how it works, clever clogs: you’ve got a little mannequin character that never stops walking unless you press [Triangle] to freeze the action and work ou..."

Japan's caught Pokemon fever once again with the release of the newest Pokemon Ranger game, as shown by the Simple 2000 Software chart, which includes sales from March 17 to 23. "If you're intent on getting an early run of Echochrome, then you may want to keep an eye out on the region's PlayStation Network. SCEJ has recently announced that they will be releasing a demo of this puzzle title for both the PSP and PlayStation 3 on March 6 (Thursday) next week. That's 13 days before the full game's release.

The Echochrome demo for the PSP is expected to be downloadable from Japan's PlayStation Spot locations, and the PlayStation Store (either PSP or PC). The demo's Play..."

"
Echochrome requires a good hard look to wrap your head around the concept the first time you witness it: Created entirely out of black lines against an ultra-minimalist, stark white background, a figure reminiscent of a mannequin artist's model navigates interconnecting, M.C. Escher-like pathways as you rotate the camera. That last part is the key, too: The pathways don't interconnect unless viewed from the right angle. If you've ever seen one of those "how many prongs does this fork have?..."

"Echochrome, the elegant black and white puzzle game coming to the Playstation 3 next year, has five simple rules to advance through each stage. We can reveal them for the first time here at Ripten.com

In Echochrome you don’t control the mannequin figure, you control the canvas itself. By changing the perspective, tilting and turning the level you can guide the mannequin safely through the levels, aided by shadow guides which act as progress points on your path.

Before we reveal the fiv..."

One of the seldom heard games for PSN and the PSP. Echochrome is a puzzle game that debuted on E3 2007 (View the trailer here). Not much was found out about the game other then what we saw, but PS3fanboy.com found out that the game will feature a level editor and can be shared through PSN. Sony is really pushing this 'user created content'

Echochrome was one of Sony's E3 surprises, captivating audiences with its simple elegance and twisted, conceptual gameplay. Appearing like an M.C. Escher take on Lemmings, just the sight of this PS3 and PSP title was puzzling in its own right. While it deserves praise for originality, Sony shouldn't get all the credit.
